I know I am a small minority on FR on this issue but long ago when I used to hang out in some notorious Leftist circles, NONE of the hard core New Left types would EVER spit at a serviceman.Their goal was to win over the soldiers to THE REVOLUTION and they went out of their way to be nicey-nice to these guys,especially the draftees.
Now there WERE a huge group of idiotic,doped up,psuedo hippie types who DID spit and abuse men in uniform back then.You used to see them all the time in their fake fringed buckskin coats,raggedy as hell and drunk or stoned much of the time.They were almost never affiliated with Left wing militants who scorned them like the plague unless they could provide rock and bottle throwing efforts at demonstrations.
Not defending the New Leftists for their anti-Americanism.They did much to harm the country.But the spitting and yelling at our military was not part of their strategy.

That's what a lot of these goons are trying to do outside of Walter Reed - pretend to be sympathetic and try to win some soldiers to their misguided cause. They're not very effective at it, either. But they still have hard-core jerks. One guy last Friday referred to American military members as "murderers." Until these peace idiots started getting really lousy press, they had signs out front saying "Maimed for a lie" and "Die for Halliburton" (or a close facsimile).

In researching the claim, I spoke to a police officer on duty. In explaining that the left tried to clean up it's act and now claims to respect our troops and even tries to rewrite history that Vietnam vets were not spit on, he got a bit irate at that news.

We subsequently talked about the university professor who has a large reward out for any Vietnam vet who could prove they were spat upon. The prof claims it's an "urban myth".

When I told hm that anyone who could claim that money (because they had the proof in writing) would fly there to claim it for free because I'd buy the plane ticket just to see that prof have to shut his mouth.

I graduated high school in the late '70s. There was no reason to join and Hanoi Kerry & Fonda were in their heyday.

I am too old to serve, but always thank every Vet that I meet. Too little too late, but the best that I can do.
