Russia Warned U.S. About Iraq, Putin Says

By Walter Pincus Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, June 19, 2004; Page A11

Russian President Vladimir Putin said yesterday that his intelligence service had warned the Bush administration before the U.S. invasion of Iraq that Saddam Hussein's government was planning attacks against U.S. targets both inside and outside the country.

Putin, who opposed Bush's decision to go to war in Iraq, did not go into detail about the information that was forwarded, and said Russia had no evidence that Hussein was involved in any attacks.

"After Sept. 11, 2001, and before the start of the military operation in Iraq, the Russian special services, the intelligence service, received information that officials from Saddam's regime were preparing terrorist attacks in the United States and outside it against the U.S. military and other interests," Putin said, according to RIA Novosti, the Russian news agency. "American President George Bush had an opportunity to personally thank the head of one of the Russian special services for this information, which he regarded as very important," the Russian president told an interviewer while in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan.

I'm not dismissing it at all. It's probably accurate intelligence. I'm saying that the President can't make this kind of decision based on only one source, and politically it would look unwise to claim that intelligence from one source is a "smoking gun."

Hah? Sodom's GOVERNMENT was planning the attacks but there's no evidence Sodom himself was involved???

WTH? Ohhhhhhh....I see what the Washington Post is saying. Sodom himself wasn't going to fly any of the airplanes into any of our skyscrapers or he wasn't going to personally drive a bomb-laden truck onto the Golden Gate Bridge or anything like that.

The Post is pathetic. Such length it will go to to exonerate Sodom Who's Insane.

Ha. It doesn't fit the agenda of the left - therefore, it must be supressed by the press and the Dems.

I'm with you....sounds like Putie is a little confused here at keeping his story
straight. Doesn't sound like reliable info to me. First he says that Saddam's government is planning these invasions of U.S., and U.S. targetsoutside this country, and yet he's against us going to war in Iraq? Seems like he is talking out of both sides of his mouth.

Me thinks...something is fishy!! Whew~~~~

I agree. I'll tell you what else is pathetic--how the once Democrap controlled Congress gutted the CIA. WE should have had agents on the ground in Iraq to back all this intelligence up.

The RATS have not only gutted the CIA, they've infiltrated it with anti-American sacks of crap like Valerie Plame.

"it didn't fit into the MSM's political agenda and therefore the MSM ignored the story."

Yep. just as the media thoroughly explored possible economic motives for the war (Halliburton, oil, etc) but NEVER explored the economic motives of France and other countries for OPPOSING the war. It just never entered their mental universe to even ask those questions.

This shouldn't be a surprise. BTW it took 60 years to find out that Hitler had planned attacks against New York.

Pincus and Mitchell and Woodward and Russert and Wilson can't get their facts straight, can't put together a consistent story line, and that's just fine with Fitz. Their contradictions and lies and memeory lapses are just fine, but Libby is a criminal for doing the same. It makes me sick.

Good point. Think about it. Woodward claims he told Pincus about Plame. Pincus says it's not true--he would have remembered something so important. Sounds a lot like Libby/Russert, doesn't it? Is Fitzgerald going to indict Woodward for lying to the GJ? Fits is shameless, indeed!!

I think Libby's legal team needs to be a bit Clintonite in preparing the defense. They need to point out all these contradictions and inconsistencies in all these other players, and situate Libby's inconsistencies within the same context, and make it look like everyone else is getting away with the same thing that Libby is charged with. They need to undermine the moral basis of the prosecution.
