Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after police searched his vehicle during a traffic stop, Plano police said Sunday.

Irvin, an ESPN analyst and semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for speeding in Irving after being pulled over Friday afternoon for speeding in Plano, the Plano Police Department said. Police spokesman Mike Johnson said he didn't know what kind of paraphernalia was found.

Irvin paid a fine on the speeding ticket and posted bond on the drug paraphernalia possession charge. He was released about an hour after he was pulled over.

"We are reviewing the facts of the situation and have no comment at this time," ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said.

Irvin pleaded no contest to felony cocaine possession on July 15 and was found guilty and sentenced to four years' probation, fined $10,000 and ordered to perform 800 hours of community service. He was also suspended for five games in the upcoming NFL season by NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue for violating the league's substance abuse policy. "You serve as a highly visible symbol of the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL," Tagliabue wrote Irvin. "While that visibility affords you substantial benefits, financial and otherwise, it significantly increases and magnifies the negative and detrimental impact of your misconduct on the league, its teams, its players and its fans (Richard Justice, "Cowboy's Irvin Draws Five-Game Suspension From NFL," Washington Post, July 25, 1996, p. Possession of drug paraphernalia won't even make a dent in his HOF chances. That Cowboys team was filled with drug users. He'd have to kill someone, declare he was a steroids user, and be a total ass to the sportswriters to not make the HOF.

A Florida Gator actually pointing out another university's crime problems? Really? BAKER, DALLAS CHARLES, TAUREAN Two Florida football players have found troubles away from spring practice. The State Attorney's Office issued a charge against linebacker Taurean Charles on Thursday for one count of misdemeanor battery, while wide receiver Dallas Baker has been accused of theft after allegedly taking a bicycle on campus. For Charles, a redshirt freshman, the arraignment could take place by the first week of May, State Attorney Bill Cervone said, almost two months after Charles was issued a sworn complaint. A UF student said Charles touched her against her will, the sworn complaint issued by the university police department said. Charles allegedly slammed her on the bed and onto a computer desk, picked her up over his head and threw her down on her roommate’s bed, according to the complaint. However, his roommate is faced with less serious charges. The sophomore was issued a sworn complaint from UPD as an officer stopped Baker near Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Feb. 23. Baker said he was late for an appointment and picked up an abandoned bicycle, according to Cervone. They will issue a charge for petty theft. CHARLES, TAUREAN 3/03 One Florida football player pleaded no contest to battery charges Tuesday and was placed on probation. Redshirt freshman Taurean Charles, 18, will face a year of supervised probation and either pay $480 in fines and court costs or serve 34 hours of community service, according to Alachua County Courthouse records. The battery charge stemmed from an altercation with a female Florida student in her dorm room in March. Charles was ordered to have no contact with the student and to attend anger management classes and counseling through the university. GAFFNEY, JABAR Jabar Gaffney, the speedy receiver with the impressive bloodlines, will get a second chance at Florida. Coach Steve Spurrier granted Gaffney the second chance nearly seven months after pulling his scholarship and kicking him off the team for stealing. Gaffney will return to school for summer courses beginning next month. He will try to make the team as a walk-on. It was during last year's state high school championships that Gaffney, then a redshirt freshman at Florida, nearly ruined his chances of ever playing for the Gators. According to a sworn complaint, Gaffney went into the Florida locker room and stole cash and jewelry from members of the Springfield Rutherford High football team while they were playing in the Class 5A title game. He was charged with grand theft. In April, Gaffney signed a deferred prosecution agreement against charges of petty theft. Spurrier and Gaffney met this spring and Spurrier told him he could return as a walk-on, with a chance of regaining his scholarship in the future. GAFFNEY, JABAR What was previously reported as a good Samaritan act by Florida star Jabar Gaffney was actually a violent attack, says the mother of the victim. Mary Barlow, mother of a 15-year-old boy who police say attempted to steal the player's motor scooter, said Friday that Gaffney didn't just apprehend the boy before calling police, but beat him, causing the son a concussion, bruises on his stomach and back, a swollen head and a black eye. On Thursday, Gaffney caught Barlow's son, Justin, and a 14-year-old stealing motor scooters outside of the player's residence, Lakeside Residential Complex. He allegedly held one of the boys until police could arrive. No charges have been filed against Gaffney, but Barlow said University Police officials questioned her son over the weekend. Before police were called, Mary Barlow said her son was thrown into a nearby lake, where Gaffney attempted to drown him. She said Gaffney and another person then dragged her son out of the water and beat him. Barlow said her son's clothes were ripped off and thrown into the lake. "The guy ripped everything off of him," she said. "He said he held my son -- no, he almost killed him." Gaffney led the Gators with 1,184 yards receiving and 14 touchdowns last season but previously had his scholarship revoked over a theft incident of his own. He was accused in December 1999 of stealing $245 in cash and an $80 watch from the Florida locker room, which was being used by a high school team during a championship game. He was charged with grand theft, and signed a "deferred prosecution agreement" last April. Spurrier pulled Gaffney's scholarship but allowed him back on the team before last season, provided Gaffney pay his own way. MITCHELL, ANTHONY Florida TE Anthony Mitchell charged with misdemeanor battery after a fight in a university dormitory. KALICH, RYAN Florida OG Ryan Kalich charged with drunk driving and leaving the scene of the arrest after colliding with a car driven by an off-duty police officer. He pleaded no contest to the first charge, received a year's probation and was required to attend alcohol education classes. GRADDY, ROD 8/99 Florida safety Rod Graddy will be kicked off the team for driving a car carrying two robbery suspects fleeing a crime scene, a source close to the investigation said Tuesday. The source, who spoke on the condition he not be identified, told The Associated Press that Graddy was to meet with coach Steve Spurrier on Tuesday night. Graddy, a junior from Cuthbert, Ga., had already been suspended for five games for violating university policy. He also had been suspended one other time for one game for the same reason. Police stopped Graddy's car shortly after a fight outside the Florida Theatre nightclub early last Friday. Two passengers in the car, Timothy Taylor, 27, and Kenneth James Welch, 19, were arrested. Police say Taylor and Welch took advantage of a ``mob scene'' at the club by snatching a $1,200 bracelet off a man who had been involved in another fight. Taylor and Welch fled to Graddy's car, and then Taylor pointed a gun at two men who had chased him, police say. Graddy said Taylor threw the gun out of the window before police pulled the car over. Police recovered the gun and arrested Taylor for strong-armed robbery and aggravated battery. Welch was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor count of accessory after the fact for hiding the bracelet under his seat when the car was stopped by police. Graddy was not charged. CROWDER, CHANNING CRUM, BRIAN MITCHELL, MO The State Attorney's office dismissed charges Friday against Florida offensive lineman Mo Mitchell and two teammates accused of vandalizing cars. State attorney Bill Cervone said investigators were unable to locate the only witness in the case, and there was no forensic evidence to move the case forward. In January, police filed complaints against Mitchell, who played extensively for the Gators last season, and teammates Brian Crum and Channing Crowder. They were accused of tearing the mirrors off eight cars. CROWDER, CHANNING HARRIS, STEVEN 4/03 Two members of the University of Florida football team were arrested Tuesday night on charges of aggravated battery. Steven Harris, 19, and Randolph Channing Crowder, 20, were booked into the Alachua County jail Tuesday night. The incident happened at 2 a.m. on April 13 in the parking lot of The Palace nightclub, 233 W. University Ave. Both Crowder and Harris punched and kicked Brian Assent in the head and face, according to the arrest report. Assents' friends brought him to the hospital. The attack lead to "permanent disfigurement," reads the report in part. Assent, 22, lost a tooth and had five others loosened. He got a cut on his face that required 11 stitches, along with other cuts and bruises. He told police a few hours later that a few UF football players showed up at The Palace and started causing problems, said Gainesville Police Sgt. Keith Kameg. When Assent left the nightclub, someone reportedly punched him in the face. He fell, lost consciousness, and didn't remember the rest of the attack. His friends later told him a couple of people kicked him several times and that they might be UF football players, Kameg said. Assent positively identified Crowder and Harris from a photo lineup, according to the report. The two were arrested at the Springs Complex on the University of Florida campus. CROWDER, CHANNING 3/03 One Florida football player pleaded no contest to battery charges Tuesday and was placed on probation. Redshirt freshman linebacker Channing Crowder, 19, will be on supervised probation for six months and will have to pay $340 in fines and court costs and/or serve 34 hours of community service. Last week, Crowder was charged with one count of misdemeanor battery stemming from an altercation with another Florida student outside a Gainesville nightclub in April. Crowder also was ordered to have no contact with the student, attend counseling at the university and not to drink alcohol. COLON, JONATHAN MITCHELL, MO 6/03 Florida linemen Mo Mitchell and Jonathan Colon were suspended from the football team for unspecified rules violations. Coach Ron Zook said they will have a chance to work their way back onto the team. Both players remain on scholarship for now. Mitchell, who moved from offense to defense in the offseason, has been in trouble several times since arriving at Florida. He and Colon upset Zook and athletic director Jeremy Foley last season when they left the field before the end of a 31-14 loss to Florida State. McCRAY, BOBBY 10/03 Florida defensive end Bobby McCray was suspended Thursday for this weekend's game against No. 4 Georgia for violating the university's class attendance policy. McCray has eight of the 23rd-ranked Gators' 17 sacks and is within reach of Alex Brown's school season record of 13. “I feel bad for Bobby,” coach Ron Zook said. “Bobby has apologized to the team, the fans and the coaches.
