Murtha: Army 'Broken, Worn Out'

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) -- Most U.S. troops will leave Iraq within a year because the Army is "broken, worn out" and "living hand to mouth," Rep. John Murtha told a civic group.

Two weeks ago, Murtha created a storm of comment when he called for U.S. troops to leave Iraq now. The Democratic congressman spoke to a group of community and business leaders in Latrobe on Wednesday, the same day President Bush said troops would be withdrawn when they've achieved victory, not under an artificial deadline set by politicians.

Murtha predicted most troops will be out of Iraq within a year.

"I predict he'll make it look like we're staying the course," Murtha said, referring to Bush. "Staying the course is not a policy."

Murtha, 73, the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, expressed pessimism about Iraq's stability and said the Iraqis know who the insurgents are, but don't always share that information with U.S. troops. He said a civil war is likely because of ongoing factionalism among Sunni Arabs, and Kurds and Shiites.

He also said he was wrong to vote to support the war.

"I admit I made a mistake when I voted for war," Murtha said. "I'm looking at the future of the United States military."

Murtha, a decorated Vietnam war veteran, said the Pennsylvania National Guard is "stretched so thin" that it won't be able to send fully equipped units to Iraq next year. Murtha predicted it will cost $50 billion to upgrade military equipment nationwide, but says the federal government is already reducing future purchases to save money.

Murtha, who represents a western Pennsylvania district that includes Latrobe, was first elected to Congress in 1974.

Lt. Col. Chris Cleaver, spokesman for the Pennsylvania National Guard at Fort Indiantown Gap, said "there are some deployment concerns."

Cleaver said some guard units had to leave equipment in Iraq when they returned to the United States, which could cause training problems here.

But Cleaver also said most of the 2,100 Guard troops now deployed with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team can't be sent back to Iraq for a second tour of duty anyway, because of regulations that limit redeployment.

Murtha is a sissified ex-Marine who has become a goffer for nancy pelosi. Marines don't fall much lower than that.

"Staying the course is not a policy."

I guess he has trouble remembering his Semper Fi training?

AND

"I admit I made a mistake when I voted for war," Murtha said. "I'm looking at the future of the United States military."

What is the military to Murtha? A big family that gives Dim Wing Nut handouts to the good chillens? The hand out era is over? Surprise, surprise!

The problem is that the military had 8 years of Clintonization and now it is getting back to normal and the Clintonian military supporters don't like the military
changing back into an effective projection of foreign policy. The military is being ruined because it is an all volunteer effective fighting force, not a semi-armed peace corps?

Little do I believe that the "military" is worn out. Why would the re-up rates be so high in theater, if that was true? Murthra is a desparado rep who is about to become unelected. Now his whining is invoking an intense dislike in our citizenry.

The mods decide when a duplicate should be pulled.
A simple thing.
Too many people have yet to understand that.

Just a thought: It would be interesting to see just what this "hero" did in Viet Nam.

I know for a fact that Bronze Stars were awarded to the senior and field-grade officers -- just like good conduct ribbons for the troops -- sort of like like popcorn at the movies. Everyone had some.

All one had to do was stay vertical -- and pass the PCOD! *S* I wrote those awards up with tongue-in-cheek -- all part of the days routine; usually late at night, after finishing up serious work: the frag for the next day's Rolling Thunder joint strike ops, etc.

So, if Murtha was a real hot shot -- let's hear it?

I doubt it very much, thank you!!

All in a day's work.

Murtha does not have a clue as to the effectiveness of todays military. It is light years beyond whatever he experienced in Viet Nam in 1967. Today's military is the most effective military machine on earth because it is composed of men and women from all levels of American life who volunteered to join. The all volunteer military is something Murtha does not get. He is one who would reinstate the draft.

Is Murtha going senile or something? The guy needs to get on some meds!

"Of course, he has the right to say what he wants"

Well, perhaps, but what about my right to demand he be tried for treason?

Senility is so sad to see in a once brave man.

Vietnam sired two types of people.

G.W.B. vs. the Clinton's

John Kerry vs. John O'Neil

On one side we have the losers, the people that brought down the United States Government and standing in the world. The people that Left Vietnamese to be murdered. The people responsible for the 'nam vets being split on, and for the higher concentration of emotional damage and suicide rates because they were told they were baby killers.

On the other side we have people that love this country. Knew that war was lost in D.C., not in the swamps. Knew that a Strong U.S. was to our benefit and those that yearn for Freedom. Knew in their souls that our troops are our brightest, most heroric and honorable given they are willing to give their life so that others may have life.

G.W.B. witnessed the 'peace' movement and turned his back on it. G.W.B witnessed the cowardice in D.C., and as result will not waver.

The opposite was true of those like the Clinton's.

I'd take a 1000 like G.W.B over someone like Kerry or Murtha that learned all the wrong lessons from Vietnam.
