New York University has set a deadline for its striking graduate student teaching and research assistants to return to work or risk losing their stipends.
The university has told its striking students they must return to class and other assignments by next week.
If they don't, they will lose their financial stipends and their eligibility to teach next semester.
Graduate teaching assistants went on strike November 9th to force NYU to recognize their right to bargain as part of the United Auto Workers Union...
For students whose teaching assistants walked out of class, NYU is offering options like taking classes pass/fail, dropping classes that have been affected by the walkout...
"I think the administration of the university sucks. I think they're completely out of line, said NYU senior Victoria Ellison. I think they have so much money - they charge us so much money ..."
It's really annoying. Kids don't want to take a class and just get a pass/fail grade if they've been putting work into the class," ...
Complaints or not, strike leaders aren't backing down...
With the December 5th deadline looming, neither side seems to be backing down.
In fact, undergraduates are sponsoring a day of action Wednesday, complete with a public student speak-out and a class boycott all day long.

NYU Severs Ties to TA Union
After months of hints and statements, New York University made it official Friday:
It will no longer deal with the United Auto Workers union that represents teaching assistants.
NYU the only private university ever to have a union for TAs said that collective bargaining interfered with academic decision making and was not needed to protect the interests of graduate students.
We believe that it is of the utmost importance to respect the principle that students are students and not employees,...

How can they afford their Starbucks?
This is so sweet. I would love to watch a debate between the two groups moderated by Brit Hume.
Anyone would want UAW benefits.
nyu has a french backbone.
Hard to believe any ultimatum they may send.
This battle is much the same as the iran iraq war.
A pox on both their houses.
"I think the administration of the university sucks. I think they're completely out of line, said NYU senior Victoria Ellison. I think they have so much money - they charge us so much money ..."
Is this the best quotation they could find from their student body?
I can't say I mourn over any loss NYU incurs. That place is crawling with more anti-military, anti-US Marxists than about anywhere else in the country.
I remember visiting their law school and meeting with the Dean. I had no intention of visiting their, but I told him that I found it extremely disturbing that their student body thought it was acceptable to blockade military JAG recruiters from interviewing students who sought jobs in the military. Yeah, the little commie fundamentalists actually prevented their own classmates from seeking job opportunities. Had I been an NYU student, I would have interviewed with them for the sheer pleasure of physically breaking through their little blockade.
WOW! A bunch of Communists on Tenure are trying to force their (for all intents and purposes) slaves back to work? Gotta love the irony.
When I was a grad student, I just studied, and for money, I ran my own business. Any classes I taught were supposed to be as much a learning experience for me as the undergrads...
Little did I realize that I could have joined the auto workers union, gotten benefits and gone on strike for "better working conditions".
What an insane world we live in.
Next thing you know, grade school kids are going to expect to be paid for attending school.
Believe it or not...
In several places in the good ol' U.S.of A., they are. It is "an incentive for poor students to go to class".
I'm too lazy to look for links, but it was discussed on a couple of threads a while back.
Different districts work it various ways, but they all boil down to periodically paying the student for meeting minimum attendance standards.
Betcha she get's A's in her Socialist Studies courses.
My son is a freshman and some of his Prof moved off campus in support and he has to spend his own money and travel a ways to attend. The Union is actually finding and paying for the offsite classrooms. The Dean says its that or the Profs will cancel class...my son also says most undergrads dont support this and are pissed.
Why on earth are graduate students involved with the United Auto Workers Union?? There already is a union for grad students and TA's - the American Association of University Professors/Workers. There's a chapter of it at Rutgers, where I am currently a grad student.
A few years ago this union was in negotiations with the administration about raising stipends and lessening the student fees that TA's have to pay, even though they are no longer "students." I never joined the union and there was no pressure to do so, but some of my classmates did.
The negotations got a little feisty but things were worked out and everyone seems pretty happy now. If the NYU grad students want a union, then why not join the AAUP? It would seem that the AAUP would be much more knowledgable about grad student issues and more experienced at dealing with administrations. What on earth does an auto workers union know about the issues and problems that graduate students and TA's face? It's apples and oranges.
Unions have no place in academic institutions. As if the tenure system is not bad enough, we have a bunch of half-educated socialists who want a UAW chapter in a pivate university.
Also, it is interesting to see how AAUP has now become the AAUP/W. LOL.....I think they are irrelevant anyway.
With her 9th grade vocabulary, I am amazed she ever got into NYU in the first place. At least she got a lot out of her Marxism 101 class.
Holy cats! Does that mean that professors are going to be expected to teach?
I actually hope these TAs stick it to the university. There's so much preening from the admins about "social justice" and they ruthlessly exploit adjunct faculty. They issue degrees that render young folks useless and unemployable--what a massive fraud.
