(St.Gabriel, LA) - Analysis of the people killed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita shows a nearly even split along racial and gender lines. Medical examiners say of the more than one thousand victims, about half are white and half are black. About half are men and about half are women. In all , the morgue set up to process bodies after the hurricane has recorded one-thousand-90 deaths. Of those, less than 500 have been returned to their next of kin. Officials are still finding bodies.

i wonder how that compares to the demographics of NO as a whole.
Somebody is going to claim that bodies were switched from other cities to balance it out.
There were dead from other Louisiana locations as well.
Race is only one factor in demographics. Gender and age might be informative, but I guess the media's not interested in those relatively boring stats.
Well, that seems fair. < /DemocratLogic>
You know, if ALL the dead women were black and ALL the dead men were white, this would still be accurate.
The story will be burried. Not even FNC will cover it.
From the story: "About half are men and about half are women."
MSM's demographic analysis: So poor, so black.
Ok, 50% were black women and 50% were poor white men.
And as for the headline: Katrina Blanco/Nagin Dead Demographics Released.
I'd like to find out where they died, by number, from which Parish or area.
And HOW they died.
From the story it is unclear whether these were Orleans Parish deaths or greater New Orleans (SMSA) deaths. If the former, then a larger percentage of whites died relative to the Orleans Parish population (Cau. c33%, Neg. c67%). If it is an SMSA statistic, then a slightly larger percentage of blacks died relative to SMSA population. Do not have those in my mind but the SMSA is probably around 60% Cau. and 40% Neg.).
From the AP photos (a small statistical sample) the young males died of violence, the elderly died of thirst and shock in "shelters" and in attics, and the out of shape died escaping the flood.
Day be profilin' da dead peeps.
What's next? A call for volunteer voters maybe?
This is a quagmire. It's time to cut and run.
I would imagine that the vast majority of these deaths aren't from Louisiana but from Mississippi where the hurricane went.
Bingo!
"I would imagine that the vast majority of these deaths aren't from Louisiana but from Mississippi where the hurricane went."
The information posted is coming out of St.Gabriel,Louisiana where was a special morgue was set up to handle the bodies of Louisiana victims. I believe the number stated refers to those victims.
