President Carter doubts U.S. military will ever leave Iraq

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Former President Jimmy Carter said he doubts whether the U.S. military will ever completely pull out of Iraq.

Carter's comments came Tuesday during a brief visit at the U.S. Military Academy where he signed copies of his newest book for West Point cadets. The former president said he believes America will have a major military presence in Iraq for decades to come.

"There has never been a single declaration among the higher levels of government now that we ever intend to withdraw completely our military forces from Iraq," Carter told reporters.

"My belief, and it may be erroneous ... is that the top leadership in this country intends 20 years from now, 50 years from now, we'll still have a major military presence in Iraq."

In a speech last week at the U.S. Naval Academy, President Bush told midshipmen: "We will increasingly move out of Iraqi cities, reduce the number of bases from which we operate and conduct fewer patrols and convoys."

Well, I'm not surprised, he doubted we could get the hostages out of Iran. Why wouldn't he doubt? He has no frame of reference for the actions of the brave men and women figting.

One can only hope. One base in the North, another outside Baghdad, and yet another for the Brits in the South.

Lemme see now, we're still in Germany and Japan 60-years after WWII.

We were in Germany between Jan 20, 1977 through Jan 20, 1981? Who was President during that period?

The nerve of the man. Jimmuh will always be remembered as the president who allowed the barbarians to overrun Iran.

Jimmy didn't believe that we would ever be able to take our sweaters off and turn up the thermostats.

Jimmy Carter didn't believe that the Iranian hostages would ever be freed.

Jimmy Carter didn't think it was possible that interests rates would go back down below 18%

Jimmy Carter thought North Korea would abide by agreements.

Jimmy Carter thinks that any election he attends is fair and free of corruption.

Jimmy Carter was, and still is, the worst President that America has ever survived - proving the strength of the Republic!

We're still in Germany, 60 years later. Why should we be out of Iraq by a week Thursday?

We would be foolish to hand Iraq over to whatever thug happens to be around. An American military presense will be required even after the Iraqis have taken over day-to-day responsibility for their own security.

Openly? Or just between him and Rosalyn? LOL, he's got some 'splainin to do. Yeah, my guess is China, but you probably already knew that. ;-) He already disagrees with our country on so many levels, on it's every action when Dems aren't in charge, a revered and open critic and 'god' to the left.. Hey, maybe we can send him in to broker a lasting peace? (But that wouldn't be fair to Taiwan...)

"Carter's comments came Tuesday during a brief visit at the U.S. Military Academy where he signed copies of his newest book for West Point cadets."

This says a lot about cadets.
