Hecklers Cause Coulter to Cut UConn Speech

STORRS, Conn. - Conservative columnist Ann Coulter gave up trying to finish a speech at the University of Connecticut on Wednesday night when boos and jeers from the audience became overwhelming. Coulter cut off the talk after 15 minutes and instead held a half-hour question-and-answer session.

"I love to engage in repartee with people who are stupider than I am," Coulter told the 2,600 people at Jorgensen Auditorium.

Coulter's appearance prompted protests from several groups, including Students Against Hate and the Puerto Rican/Latin American Cultural Center. They criticized her for spreading a message of hate and intolerance.

Nearly 100 students gathered inside the Student Union for a rally against Coulter. About a half-dozen people held protest signs outside the auditorium.

After a book signing following her appearance, Coulter called the audience's reaction "typical."

Coulter, originally from New Canaan, Conn., has a history of bashing Democrats in best-selling books, frequent television appearances and speeches. Harding University in Arkansas dropped her from its lecture series in September, citing her abrasive image.

Last April, the president of the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota denounced a speech on the campus by Coulter, calling it hateful. In October 2004, University of Arizona police arrested two men who ran on stage and threw custard pies at Coulter; one of the pies glanced off her shoulder.

In her speech at UConn, Coulter called Bill Clinton an "executive buffoon" who won the presidency only because Ross Perot took 19 percent of the vote. She called California Sen. Barbara Boxer a good candidate for the Democrats because "she is a woman and she's learning disabled."

During the question-and-answer session, someone asked Coulter if she really was against a woman's right to vote.

"Not having women vote is a joke," she said, reversing comments she has previously made.

Eric Knudsen, a 19-year-old sophomore journalism and social welfare major at UConn, didn't attend the speech.

"We encourage diverse opinion at UConn, but this is blatant hate speech," said Knudsen, head of Students Against Hate.

Kareem Mohni, a 20-year-old junior and a member of a campus Republicans group, said he was disgusted with the Jorgensen crowd.

"It really appalled me that we're not able to come together as a group and listen to a different view in a respectful environment," he said.

So the hatefull little b*****ds wouldn't tolerate anyone hearing her excerdcise ehr First Amendment Rights to free speech. Typical.

With a major in those areas I can guarantee you that this guy was the punching bag during his high school days.

With a major in those areas, this guy had better get real good at asking, "Would you like fries with that?" That's about all that degree will be worth.

Have you noticed that liberals don't generally apply saracasm as much in the way they address things?

Sarcasm assumes a reliance upon logic. That is, one makes logical statements illogical and by doing so, expects others to follow along. Libs, on the other hand, rely on their own emotions a lot more, and we all know that sarcasm and appeals to the emotion just don't mix. That alone makes them sound pretentious.

"They criticized her for spreading a message of hate and intolerance."

Definitely a biased report. When Saddam, Castro, or another brutal dictator is accused of torturing and murdering people, MSM writers usually write that he's accused of "allegedly" torturing and murdering thousands of people. But when writing about a conservative such as Ann, this writer didn't write "allegedly spreading a message of hate...." or "spreading a message that they consider to be hate...." The writer wrote a sentence that makes it sound like this is a factual accusation, as though it is accepted fact that Ann is "spreading a message of hate and intolerance."

The MSM is very slick and crafty about presenting assumptions and opinions as though they are accepted facts. They use this technique to mold the viewpoints of those who are not fully aware of their strong left-wing bias.

I can't imagine Ann really calling for the end of sufferage.

I can. A few years ago, "The Man Show" set up an on the street bit where they had a petition to end woman's suffrage. They told people things like "hey, these women are sufferaging". People signed it. She's probably referring to that.

And then it will be "We'll decide who is worthy to live."

How about a Federal law, denying funding of any sort to any college that allows invited speakers to be harassed? Pull the god-damned $ rug out from under these bozos. We have the congress; let's do it now.

Sometimes I imagine someone in the year 2200 writing a history of the former republic known as the United States, now under the iron hand of a repressive socialist regime. The book begins with "First the democrat-controlled congress passed hate speech laws which silenced the conservatives. In a stunning unexpected ruling, the Supreme Court upheld these laws. After that it was all downhill for the US..."

Hi chudogg - great review, thanks.

I went to school in the Home of Stanley Tools - New Britain. At that time, UConn was only known for cow tipping, not leftist, Marxist intolerance! Of course, that was the late 70s, and we even had Phyllis Schlafly come and speak. Imagine that today...

Excellent point!

As I have observed their preferred tool is hysteria, an emotional excess used as camouflage their lack of intellectual ability to engage.

Ooooh, much like what we're seeing with the Muslim totalitarianists right now. Wipe out the opposition so we can be the pure ones.

This is another very good reason for the parents of America to stop financing these propaganda mills posing as colleges and universities.

Do not spend your life savings to send your child to such brainwashing madrassas.

Decent Americans spend years teaching their values to their children and then pay a fortune to communist indoctrination centers to have their children brainwashed.

Why?

Left-wing, America-hating trash are in charge of universities.

Starve these institutions of money until they wither and their bohemian instigators have to get jobs flipping hamburgers where they belong.

No campus freedom of speech and lack of political balance should mean ABSOLUTELY NO MONEY TO UNIVERSITIES!

These communists would not have their ivy league enclaves if good people didn't pay money to build and maintain them.

I graduated from a major university in the early seventies and I was sick of fighting the left-wing trash on campus even back then. It is FAR WORSE NOW!

Really? I've had a CT Concealed Carry Permit for 20 years and that's long before anyone could get one in Texas.

To a liberal like Eric Knudsen - expressing conservative views is hate speech. The least free places to pursue intellectual inquiry is on our nation's campi. And I just love the Orwellian irony about "diversity." If you've got the wrong views, you're not welcome to lecture at any institution of higher education in the United States and Canada.

Ann didn't reverse anything. Liberals miss nuances like sarcasm when a conservative says something. They take what we say... too literally!

I'd be interested to see the original comments again. It was a long time ago, but as I recall, the remark drew quite a few comments on FR agreeing with the idea, not all of whom were men. It was one of the few times I regretted pointing friends and family to FR.
