Renteria's gone (Red Sox Trade Rent-a-Wreck to Atlanta)
Boston Globe ^ | 12/8/05 | Gordon Edes

December 08, 2005 Renteria's gone By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff Edgar Renteria's tenure in Boston was a short one.

The Sox dealt Renteria and cash considerations to Atlanta today in exchange for top prospect Andy Marte (third baseman). Commissioner Bud Selig needed to OK the money exchanging hands between the teams. The Red Sox are expected to pick up part of the $29 million remaining on Renteria’s contract over the next three years. The exact dollars are still unclear, but the commissioner needs to approve any deal in which $1 million or more exchanges hands.

The Red Sox are now expected to sign a free-agent shortstop to replace Renteria rather than pursue a trade with the Devil Rays for Julio Lugo, as had been rumored the last couple of days here at the winter meetings.

Some likely candidates to fill Renteria's shoes include Alex Gonzalez, Royce Clayton, and Pokey Reese.

Red Sox Nation, why can't we get players like Orlando Cabrera?

No kidding!!! Cabrerra is a nice player who seemed to have the spark to come through in the clutch. Going after Renterria was a huge mistake.

At least the Red Sox got a top prospect for him. Texas just traded Soriano for two broken down injury prone journeymen and a minor league pitcher.

Mostly because many players don't want to play for the RS. They whine to much and have an excuse every time they lose a game. Red Sox fans more then any others I have met cannot discuss a loss without the use of the term "if only". If only the ball Pappy hit was up 1/4" on the bat it would have been a HR. If only Damon was playing 2' more towards right, he catches that ball and the inning ends. If only, if only.

If only my Aunt had balls she'd be my Uncle.

"Going after Renterria was a huge mistake."

Did not understand that move at the time - still don't.
Edgar seemed out-of-shape from the git-go, moody and just plain lost at shortstop - almost like he had never played the position before, kind-of creepy.
Cabrera signed for less with Angels (but same four years contract) and had a good year.
Up-beat and sparky, too - would love to see him back.

In the name of all Red Sox fans, "Your Aunt, indeed, does have balls."

Good call by the Cardinals to let him go and pick up Eckstein...Walt Jocketty is the best GM in baseball.

Renterria played like he was 45 yrs old. No range, no flexibility, no interest. He otherwise seemed like a nice guy, though.

If Atlanta's history is any indication, Renteria will play a key role in another playoff season.

I swear, that team could put together a playoff-caliber roster from a pile of rocks.

To the Dodgers - three-years $39-million deal.

I actually like this trade. They got rid of a guy who didn't fit in Boston and replaced him with a prospect that has a lot of upside down the road. They have a kid named Pedroia who could play short or second that looks a lot like David Eckstein. 2nd basemen are almost a dime a dozen (SS with no arms). what they lack is a good first baseman. The guy they got from the Padres will fill in nicely at second.

The Sox are a team in transition.

Cabrerra wanted too long of a contract, same reason they won't sign Damon.

10 to 1 Schureholtz and the Braves cleaned the Red Sox "suits" clock. He is the best GM in baseball and he was trading with the bean counters (no pun intended).

The Red sox got a prospect that in a year when the Braves played 18 rookies he couldn't hold on.He couldn't hit Major League pitching.
