Target Includes 'Christmas,' AFA Drops Boycott

American Family Association (AFA) has announced that it is ending its boycott of Target because the company has announced that it will include Christmas in their advertising and in-store promotions.

"We are pleased to learn that Target has heard our concerns and decided to use Christmas in their advertising and marketing efforts. Since the company has responded positively, we see no need to continue the boycott,” said AFA Chairman Donald E. Wildmon.

Nearly 700,000 people had signed up to join the Target boycott at afa.net on the AFA website. Wildmon said that many companies have decided to drop their ban on Christmas.

In their official statement, Target said: "Over the course of the next few weeks, our advertising, marketing and merchandising will become more specific to the holiday that is approaching – referring directly to holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah. For example, you will see reference to Christmas in select television commercials, circulars and in-store signage.

"We do not have a policy or intention of excluding the word ‘Christmas’ from our holiday advertising or marketing. Christmas images and themes have been used in our advertising and marketing in the past and you will continue to see these images and themes in the future.”

"We think you will see a different approach next year,” Wildmon said.

Mockers would be nothing if they didn't mock.

"If you get on their web site you will find a direct link to the Salvation Army."

Target to Salvation Army bell rings: Get lost. But we've got this nifty web site.

Well said, Doug.....and well worth repeating!

"It has nothing to do with your faith, and I am sorry you have missed the big picture. It is all part of the same leftist PC nonsense that has been tearing down our culture and traditions. The same people responsible for making Christmas a 4-letter word, are the same people for gay marriage, for the cross being removed from the hill in San Diego, for the ban on real Christmas carols in school that we sang for our whole lives, for quotas, for ballots being published in multiple languages, etc. These are the leftists and socialists, and some of us have finally had enough. People shouldn't be afraid to say Christmas, merchants shouldn't be afraid to say Christmas tree, and companies shouldn't be afraid to have Christmas parties."

Does anyone know which stores have changed their tune on Christmas? So far I know of Lowes, Sears, Target, and Walgreens (in 2006). I emailed KMart, Sears, Wal-Mart, and Target a few weeks ago letting them know we wouldn't be doing our shopping at their stores since they weren't celebrating Christmas. KMart sent back a vague response and Target gave me some blather about 'diversity'.

I guess they finally got the hint. Too bad most of my shopping is done. At least I shopped at stores who were reasonable from the beginning and didn't need to be convinced.

Merry Christmas!

I found some more information. I went to WND and found this:
Target, Sears boycotts end
At the end of the article is Concerned Women for America's (CWA) anti-Christmas list. Note: it has not been updated to reflect Target's decision so I don't know how many 'Scrooges' remain.

Here's a better page (from the AFA) with updated store listings it also includes phone numbers and e-mail addresses (including stores to thank for changing their position re: Christmas):
These companies have banned "Christmas" from their retail ads, in-store promotions or television commercials

Phone calls work better. When I asked a manager at Sears if they made a change to use the word Christmas, she said they did. She sounded very happy about it. And she sounded very happy to return my Merry Christmas greeting.
