'SHEL' SHOCK GROWS (NY Assembly Speaker Silver ripped for saying he doesn't go to police funerals)
NY Post ^ | December 9, 2005 | NILES LATHEM and KENNETH LOVETT

National law-enforcement organizations yesterday ripped state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver for saying he doesn't go to police funerals, calling his comments a slap in the face to professional cops everywhere.

"Even after what he said, if Mr. Silver ever called for some kind of help, police officers would come to his home to help him. That's the difference between a police officer and an idiot like Mr. Silver," said Bill Johnson, executive director of the National Association for Police Organizations.

"For a public official to make such a statement, its not only an insult to law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line, but its also an abrogation of his duty," said Rich Roberts of the International Union of Police Associations.

Spokesmen for several police advocacy organizations wondered why Silver is still in politics after comments he made earlier this week during the emotional Brooklyn funeral for hero police officer Dillon Stewart. He told The Post: "I don't go to cops' funerals."

"We don't like to go to police funerals either. But we go to them hundreds of times a year, because our police officers die so this man has the right to say whatever he chooses," said Susie Sawyer, executive director of the Concerns of Police Survivors, a national support group for the families of slain officers.

"It's unfortunate that a man in his position doesn't recognize the supreme sacrifice that this officer made," Sawyer added.

Ed Mullins, president of the city's Sergeants Benevolent Association, called on Silver to stop shunning police funerals — especially if he continues to seek political support from police organizations.

"I would understand if he had another event, but to have a policy of not going to cops' funerals, I think he needs to rethink that since he's more than happy to..."

Head of the NY Assembly Sheldon Silver is one of the nation's most crooked politicians. He is a mega-shyster, making millions from slip and fall cases, while preventing any and all tort reform law from ever even being discussed. His Chief of Staff was a serial rapist, ferociously defended by Silver.

He is of course a democrat. (that is the creep on the left)

---frankly, if I was a cop, I would as soon that the politicians didn't need to make my funeral into a campaign stop.

And furthermore , as a taxpayer, I fail to see the need for cops or fireman from all over the state to attend the funeral of someone they don't know--all on the taxpayer dime.

Well well, I've waited for a long time for him to open his mouth and hang himself with his own tongue...looks like he has finally done so!

Not an exageration.

250 are feloniously killed per annum. Then you have straight up traffic collisions and training mishaps.

For every cop that gets murdered, 4-10 take their own life (accurate numbers are hard to come by but I've read both, with 4 being the most commonly used figure.)

"But we go to them hundreds of times a year,"

possibly an exaggeration ?

Most likely.

From the article:
""We don't like to go to police funerals either. But we go to them hundreds of times a year, because our police officers die so this man has the right to say whatever he chooses," said Susie Sawyer, executive director of the Concerns of Police Survivors, a national support group for the families of slain officers.

There was only one, count 'em ONE, NYPD officer killed in the line of duty this year. So these "hundreds" a year she's talking about must be funerals for 70-year-old retired officers who died of heart attacks, old age? Serving officers who fell in the bathtub?

"Well well, I've waited for a long time for him to open his mouth and hang himself with his own tongue...looks like he has finally done so!"

Do you think? Many of the NY democrat party agrees with his sentiment. Don't you rememeber them spitting on the honor guard carrying the flag into opening of the legislature a couple of years back. Oh and of course Hillary and other high ranking dem/socialists silence!

My bad. She's part of a NATIONAL support group, not a New York group only. Disregard my previous post.

My opinion is that this number is low. My father was a City of Pittsburgh Police Officer, and when he died this summer, the funeral director knew him, and did a surprise arrangement for our family. They had a F.O.P. Honor night (Faternal Order of Police).

12 officers came and said prayers and sang songs, and stayed for 3 hours and told stories about my dad and about the police station where he worked. 3 of the woman who came and 2 of the older men told us they do that kind of thing at least 2-3 nights a week! That's over 150 a year, and I would think N.Y. has more police officers than Pittsburgh. (Remember, they go to every funeral - for retired guys also.) Karen

I ran into Silver once at a hotel next to Grand Central Station. I think they used the wrong photo for Bill Johnson.

Bill Johnson, Executive Director of the National Association for Police Organizations.

That's Sheldon Silver from Google Images.

I doubt it's an exaggeration. I believe they send officers from most States to participate in other police funeral.

I know that when we had an officer killed last year there was a procession with police from alot of towns and other States. We had traffic at a stop on one side of the road for about 10+ miles, while people on the other side came out of their cars to stand in respect all along the route to the burial site. From one side of town to the other.
