Mr. Chertoff outlined what he called a three-pronged plan to get control of the border . . . and creating a temporary guest-worker program to deal with illegals already in the country.

Typical bait-and-switch. Guest workers are no part of controlling the border. We should now start asking the "temporary guest worker" advocates who will fill those low-wage jobs vacated by these new "legals" as they move up the economic ladder. Oh yeah, the next tsunami of illegals who will lay low, waiting for yet another "temp worker" plan to be advocated.

It takes time to correct especially when you never get started.

Typical bait-and-switch.

The first and only part of any immigration bill that gets fully funded and implemented will be its amnesty provisions, as usual enforcement would turn into a joke.

.....the government has begun a campaign to secure America's borders.

Four years and three months too late.

A lot longer than that, actually.

I'm convinced it's just lip service anyway to get the amnesty through then it's back to business as usual.

And you're probably right.

I suspect it will always be 'business as usaul' till a WMD goes off in ... oh let's say Brownsville, TX.

The Administration, be it labeled "D" or "R", will say it was homegrown. But when another similar one goes off in Saltillo or Monte-rares Mexico .... then we'll have secure borders.
Just guessing of course.

Even then I'm not so sure given nothing happened after 9/11. Our only hope may be electing someone like Tancredo who means business when it comes to the borders.

Someone on FR posted it will take 2 more 9-11 type events to wake us up. Watching the 'Rats and their usual capitulations, Dubya's border policies, I think 2 is the number.
We've had it soft and easy for too long and frankly just want the problem to go away. When you see the local police hauling off illegals, it will remind us that we are vulnerable, thus anxiety about daily life will come into play. Some of us wonder do we still have what it takes?

It really comes down to the government, they don't seem to have what it takes. We'll probably never get the type of massive deportations that Eisenhower did but if they would just secure the borders and deport the illegals gradually as they're encountered I think most of us would be satisfied but they won't even do that.

What I fear should another 9/11 attack occur is the only thing they'll come after is our civil rights, nothing will change regarding illegals and the borders.

Wait until our economy tanks, and then 20 million illegals refuse to go home in the midst of very high unemployment, but instead demand to be fed, educated, medicated etc.

I caught a glimpse of it in '92 when California tanked and the 5 year period for the '87 amnesty folks to collect welfare was over.
The state simply stole money from the counties, the counties stole from the cities and everyone raised user fees and the state Collage and UC system jacked their fees.

I think we've passed "critical mass" in numerous future Mexican "enclaves" within the USA. They will just not obey any laws which are passed.
