In Part Four of his new book, "Character is Destiny," McCain writes about his role as chaplain for Christmas service in his Vietnamese prison, and about a guard who snuck in at night to loosen the ropes that bound McCain, and then snuck in in the morning to tighten them before other guards could notice.
The guard said nothing while performing this kindness, but one time, in the yard, "I became aware of him as he walked near me and then, for a moment, stood very close to me. He did not speak or smile or look at me. He just stared at the ground and then, very casually, he used his foot to draw a cross in the dirt. We both stood looking at his work for a minute until he rubbed it out and walked away."
Did you rat him out?
And now McCain says we shouldn't torture terrorists because it doesn't work.
Put that guy in a rubber room.
US intelligence services have traditionally said that torture doesn't yield reliable "confessions" and information -- i.e., it doesn't work.
But in any case, the reason we shouldn't torture is because torture is for regimes like North Vietnam - the animals who caged our military men and treated them inhumanely. The military of the United States - the military founded by Washington, and led by the likes of Grant, Pershing, MacArthur, Eisenhower -- does not torture. McCain is against torture, I hope and believe, because it is wrong and it would dishonor this nation and our noble military.
Have you actually read about how the United States tortures jihadists? From the look of your posts, the clear answer is a resounding NO.
But other freepers have so we can enlighten you. The forms of "torture" that we've used include sleep deprivation, playing music loudly, etc. The absolute WORST torture I've seen mentioned anywhere is light punching in the stomach.
And at least you've dropped the claims that torture doesn't work because McCain in his autobiography admits that it worked on him.
I remember kerry did the same thing at the wall ( he was also told it was not authorized)after he had included in his book that he would not join vfw,partipate in parades,rallies anything to show support to american military and then had those same pics used in a campaign ad shameless ;liz cheney had it right "he will say and do anything"
don't ever forget,never in a 1000 yrs. and then he labeled the families as shrills and opportunists;his efforts enabled Kerry's cousin to secure a lucrative, sole contract to rebuild vietnam's ports. I wonder how much of a kickback he got ,deny him the presidency just like the swifties revealed the vietnam war hero "frenchy kerry"
I am sure his father is ashamed of him, just as Henry (and even Peter) Fonda were of Hanoi Jane. Henry retired from the Naval Reserves a Captain (0-6).
Which explains why he came out against them the moment they spoke the truth about Kerry.
He has now joined Christie Whitman's PAC and they're main focus is the complaint that the Christian Coalition has taken over the republican party.
Guess he hopes they're too stupid to notice he's on Whitman's PAC board.
Initially McCain said he gave up ship positions in exchange for medical treatment as soon as he was captured.
He betrayed the POWs left behind in VN.
His blaming of the Christian Coalition for his loss in the primaries, and various other backstabbing of our President does not give him the high moral ground.
Nothing 'Christian' about McCain's lack of principles.

You don't mention "waterboarding."
But I knew you would.
And since you are so unenlightened, I'm relatively certain you don't know that our OWN soldiers are subjected to waterboarding when they go through basic training. It's to teach them how to withstand tough questioning in the even they are captured.
But nice try anyway, churchillbuff.
What do you mean, "nice try"? Is waterboarding something you would allow? I consider it torture; so do many others, in the military and congress. The fact that our troops are trained to experience it - in case they're tortured by captors who adopt uncivilized tactics -- is hardly an argument for the United States of America to stoop to such tactics. Definitely it's something that should be outlawed by a measure such as McCain's, if that's what's required to outlaw it. Waterboarding was introduced, as I understand, during the 16th century wars of religion, as one of the options to using the to the rack on heretics.

Oh, okay. So waterboarding should be outlawed. For our troops and the terrorists. I'll give you that -- if it's outlawed for our troops, then outlaw it for the terrorists. But otherwise, forget it.
waterboarding is much too nice when we’re dealing with murderous barbarians. we are up against scumbags that will do anything to kill us and you want to bring a pocket knife to a gunfight?? if it would prevent another terrorist attack on our country, i would support even keelhauling. get real, this is not comic books....
