WIGGINS, Miss. - A Forrest County man was denied bond Monday after being charged with two counts of capital murder in the Sunday night shooting deaths of two Wiggins police officers.
Ronald Husband was returned to the Stone County Regional Correctional Facility after appearing before Stone County Justice Court Judge Theresa Dearman.
Husband, 46, of the Brooklyn community, is accused of killing officers Odell Fite, 48, and Brandon Breland, 23, as they responded to a domestic disturbance. Fite and Breland were killed outside a mobile home.
Husband surrendered to officers Sunday night after they arrived at his Brooklyn home.
Wiggins Police Chief Buddy Bell said the shootings had dealt the small town a "devastating blow."
"It's hard. We've lost two family members," Bell said. "We will deal with it like any other family."
The department has 15 officers. Fite and Breland were the only patrolmen on duty Sunday night, which is normal, Bell said.
Bell said Husband had spoken to his pastor, but said he did not know whether Husband was talked into surrendering Sunday night when lawmen arrived at his Brooklyn home.
Bell would not answer speculation that the police officers were shot with their own weapons.
"A handgun was the weapon that was used," Bell said.
Fite had been in law enforcement for 20 or more years and was working for the Wiggins department for the second time, Bell said.
"The officers responded to an open-line domestic dispute," he said. "At this time, that's all I know. They're two of the best people who chose law enforcement as a profession, both very dedicated, both very good officers."
Bell said the domestic call stemmed from an argument Husband had with a female friend who lived at the mobile home. Bell said the unidentified woman sought medical treatment.
"It's devastating," said Stone County Sheriff Mike Farmer. "My guys are in tears. They're just tore all to pieces, both departments. We all work together."
Fite had run for sheriff of Lamar County, said his wife, Kay Fite of Brooklyn. He also served a term as police chief in New Augusta.
"Ninety-nine percent of the people really liked him," she said.
"The criminals, he treated them like people," she said. "I'm sure this guy he dealt with tonight, he didn't go in there with a cocky attitude."
Besides his wife, Fite is survived by three children and four grandchildren.
Breland, a Perkinston native, had been with the department for five years and was a trained narcotics officer, Bell said.
The dispatcher lost contact with the officers after they responded to the call and called the sheriff's department for assistance, said Stone County Sheriff Mike Farmer.
"My deputies and an investigator found them," Farmer said. "They had been shot."
The shooting took place next door to the J.F. Miller Timber Co. An elderly man who lives in the mobile home had been hospitalized in Hattiesburg, Farmer said.
The investigation was turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Investigators and Public Safety Commissioner George Phillips would say only that the case is under investigation.

Terrible, prayers offered.
My Dad was a cop for several years. He said he hated domestic disturbances more than any other type of call. They're kind of like throwing a brick in a mud puddle. Everybody gets dirty. Prayers for them and their families.
I hate them too, and that's what I get more of than any other type of call. Anything can happen; and a situation can go from bad to deadly in an instant.
Imagine answering such a call without backup!

A man is on death row for defending himself against the a cop breaking into his home at night. Which part do you disagree with?

I don't want to hijack the thread... but a cop going in wearing armor but not carrying a weapon isn't a bad cop. He's stupid. I don't believe he was 'bad.' He broke down the wrong door. What is bad are no knock warrants in the service of the WOD. And, since I believe he was neither stupid or unarmed, I believe law enforcement in that city is lying to protect the chief's son at the expense of an innocent man's life.
Uh gee, maybe this part: "My empathetic feelings for Mississippi law enforcement are in a bit of a recession". That case, right or wrong, had nothing to do with the one on this thread. I've already been on the one you are carrying the banner for, The cop you refer to was part of a drug bust - he didn't just break into a home as you indicate in your post here. And you know nothing more about the inside facts of the case than I do. Some people just have an axe to grind with all cops.
So if they'd been from 50 miles different, say in Alabama, you'd feel sorry for them and their families?
But since they're from Mississippi, they don't deserve to be mourned?
If you read that story carefully you will discover that the shootings were outside a mobile home where an elderly man lived. The suspect was arrested at his home, which is not described as a "mobile home".
There are some very curious details here.

There is a perhaps questionable case in Prentiss Mississippi...my homestate and that gives you the right to piss on the murder of two cops in another Mississippi town that has diddly to do with your little pet issue.

And your allegations of racism have absolutely no proof...zero. It's just your wild wishful thinking. In the Prentiss case, he was convicted by a mixed jury Gomer....in a town that is 20% black and in a county that is 57% black and in a state that is about 40% black and at which blacks hold high office throughout.
You should try and get beyond your John Grisham worldview. How many blacks in your perfect world or do you only see them on TV?

I think you should acknowledge that the facts of this encounter are not in dispute a la Cory Maye. That you would let the Maye dispute color your view of this incident, which appears to be an clear case of the murder of two innocent policemen responding to a domestic dispute call, says a lot about your anti-LEO and anti-MS agenda. In essence, you are saying "I'm not so sorry these guys died b/c they are Mississippi cops." It apparently doesn't matter to you that they had absolutely NOTHING to do with the Maye incident which has your knickers all in a wad. So much for your concepts of "justice."
