The American public is now emphatically rejecting government control of TV content. Study shows that liberal philosophies of "the government protecting people from themselves" are suffering from a major backlash. Study also shows that Parents want to be the ones controlling TV content for their children and not the government.
The internet will be next.
Of course, no one asked us if we would like to have Nicktoons without having to pay for MTV.
Americans overwhelmingly want Big Brother to butt out of their TV watching, according to a new study of U.S. viewing habits set for release Tuesday.Article is here.According to the survey, done this month by Russell Research for TV Watch, 81 percent of American TV watchers worry about the kinds of programs their children could be exposed to, and 91 percent of parents said more parental involvement is the best way to keep kids from seeing what they shouldn't see. Just 9 percent of parents said the government should increase control and enforcement of network television programming.
The survey arrives in time for Tuesday's Senate forum, focusing on racy television programming. The all-day gathering, called by Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, includes representatives from conservative and liberal groups, the Federal Communications Commission, TV executives and groups like the Parents Television Council that have been the big drivers in recent moves to crack down on racy broadcasts.
"People see something on TV they don't like, and some activists yell from the rooftops calling for more government intervention, but that's not what people want," said Jim Dyke, executive director of TV Watch. "The vast majority of the people don't want the government making their programming decisions."
TV Watch is a broad-based coalition that opposes government control of TV programming and promotes the use of such tools as content ratings and parental controls. Its members include the American Conservative Union, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and The Creative Coalition. Viacom, News Corp. and NBC Universal, the respective owners of CBS, Fox and NBC, are also members.
Of interest, in light of recent noises to regulate content on private satellite and cable media.
Real simple idea ( The kind the 'crats hate !!).
Turn off the TV.
If it offends or you don't want the kiddo seeing it, just turn it OFF!!
I have a "parental control" channel blocker with our DirectTV system. It works. We USE it.
Government censorship is a violation of our Civil Rights!
My censorship of the TV in my home is my choice not Big Brother's.
It's time to close down the FCC.
Pubs run the FCC now. All this uproar started by one breast on tv. Amazing.
Hardly limited to liberals.
The FCC should stick to regulating things like signal strengths and frequencies to prevent interference with broadcasting.
and a pierced and floppy one at that.
Now THAT was obscene!!
They're coming for us, you know. They'll have to pry my XM out of my cold, dead hands.
I'm impressed!! I'm on a ping list run by a guy who joined tomorrow!! ;-)
