(Bush Speech Live Thread) Bush to compare Iraqis to America's founders

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush is using a visit to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, birthplace of the U.S. Constitution, as a reminder before the Iraqi elections that the path to American democracy was not always easy either.

Pennsylvania also is the home state of a leading Iraq war critic, Democratic Rep. John Murtha, who planned to speak on Bush's heels and repeat his call to bring the troops home from a fight he says has become too violent and out of control...

Iraqis are preparing to vote under tight security to elect a 275-member parliament that will run the country for the next four years. The election will be the first under the new constitution ratified in an October 15 referendum and will complete the steps toward democratization following the ouster of Saddam Hussein's government.

Monday's Iraq speech is Bush's third, part of a campaign to win support for the mission, with most Americans saying in polls that they disapprove of his handling of the war. The speech is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. ET.

I think most of the "the Iraqis aren't capable of democracy" thinking comes from the academic elite. HARD core leftists, who are supposed to be 'tolerant' and 'open-minded.'

That's why I'm always amused and a touch disturbed when I see that same sentiment among conservatives.

The far right agrees with the far left, a great deal more than it agrees with the majority of us here on FR.

You are confusing culture with the desire for freedom in our souls

Good point...and the President's belief in the human soul is truly inspiring.

I just went back to #15, to which I was responding. That doesn't sound like a "lecture" to me; it sounds like a darned good suggestion. I must be missing some undercurrent here.

FINALLY! The President is now pounding the American detractors with facts, facts, and more facts. He started off with a slug of American history, right out of the kind of history books that are no longer used in American public schools.

The simple truth is that WE had fits and starts, failures and even deaths, before we finally got it straight in our SECOND form of government, the Constitution. I was overjoyed to see him begin by giving that history, and even remind the listeners (and the ever-lazy American press) about the Articles of Confederation.

Fine speech, for those who bother to read it, listen to it, or even crack a history book as a result of it. (Are you listening, you editors and reporters at the NY Times?)

President recognizes an image issue noting Arab and other stations which state continuously that we're the bad guys. He could have also mentioned our own alphabet soup, too.

The Demons must know in their heart of hearts that they will be caught with their pants down in 2006. Being against Iraq might have been the "in" thing for awhile, but with the recent vote and the rapidly increasing ability of the nation to rule itself, Dubya will just stomp on their hopes and dreams of failure.

Now, as an undertone, President Bush said that another issue was immigration reform.

That was a very interesting comment. And quite telling. So when we hear the complaints about the Pentagon working with reporters, paying reporters, to get the TRUTH out, we'll just tell them to shut up.

And those who don't share his vision on the God-given desire for freedom, are pretty much lost when it comes to understanding what's going on.

Some idiot asked about 9-11 and the connect to Iraq then the Iraq invasion. Bush is giving the politically correct answer but damn just once I'd like to hear him state that there WERE connections between Saddam and Al-Queda. Then list them.

A woman just asked why he cites 911 as a reason for invading Iraq. He responds by stating that he had to look at terrorist differently and respond to threats against US. He went after terrorist in Afghanistan first and then the threat of Hussein. That makes America a better place and a safer country.
