Pirro Not Ready To End Senate Race, Aide Says
Buffalo News ^ | 12/12/05

ALBANY - Jeanine Pirro will not immediately end her campaign for the Republican nomination to challenge Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's 2006 re-election bid even if GOP leaders ask her to do so, a top aide said Sunday.

"The rumors and speculation that Jeanine Pirro is dropping out of the Senate race tomorrow are false," Pirro campaign spokeswoman Andrea Tantaros said Sunday.

Tantaros refused to comment on what might ultimately happen with the struggling Pirro campaign.

The latest speculation about the Pirro campaign's future came on the eve of a meeting of the state's county GOP chairmen. The session today in Albany could lead to an endorsement of a proposal from State Senate Republican Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno that Pirro switch to the state attorney general's race.

The New York Post reported last week that Bruno made his suggestion at the urging of Pirro's lawyer-lobbyist husband, Albert Pirro, without his wife's knowledge. Albert Pirro did not deny that report.

Sunday, the New York Daily News, citing unidentified GOP insiders, said Pirro, Westchester County's high-profile district attorney, was expected to quit the Senate race today. Tantaros said that was wrong.

A top state GOP official familiar with the situation told the Associated Press that no matter what the county chairmen recommend today, Pirro plans to take a few days to consider the situation.

The GOP official spoke only on condition of anonymity, saying he was not authorized by Pirro to discuss the issue.

The Post, quoting unidentified Republicans, reported Sunday that while Pirro was interested in possibly leaving the Senate race, she didn't want to bail out yet because it was easier to raise campaign money as a Clinton opponent than as a candidate for state attorney general. However, Tantaros told the AP that was not driving Pirro's continued Senate campaign.

While Pirro's Senate campaign had the backing of Republican Gov. George E. Pataki and state GOP Chairman Stephen Minarik, she has had trouble raising money, and polls show her trailing far behind the former first lady.

The Republican leaders are also to consider today whom they want as their candidate for governor next year. Pataki has said he will not seek a fourth term.

While Minarik is favoring the candidacy of former Massachusetts Gov. William F. Weld to become governor of his native New York, other GOP contenders include Rochester billionaire businessman B. Thomas Golisano, who owns the Buffalo Sabres. Golisano has lost three races for governor as the candidate of the Independence Party. He recently became a Republican.

This seems to be part of her problem. Nobody seems to know what she is doing.

It is incredible that the Republican party is laying down in certain areas. What kind of log cabin Repubs are running that state's Repub Convention?

All she is doing is worrying and ranting about Hillary running in 2008. She's not even taking on Hillary on the issues. John Spencer is the only one talking about issues!

Probably better to focus on a winnable race. This is Hillary! in New York running as an incumbent, can't get much more of a sure thing than that. There's no way on God's green Earth she will lose her Senate seat. Being a sacrificial lamb to Hillary! is probably a one-way ticket to oblivion. Anyone heard of Rick Lazio lately (other than being the loser to Hillary!)?

Piro's husband went to prison for tax fraud while she has been the D.A. of Westchester County. The good news is that she was re-elected while he was in jail.

I think he's still trying to pay back some money he owes from the campaign against Hillary. But He never really got much of a chance or time to campaign for funds because he got in the race late in the game.

You can have Hillary or Hillary-Lite. Is either one less taxing? Is either one satisfying?

That's the worst part. Hillary! is such a wide target, yet Pirro won't even take aim. She deserves to lose, and if we don't force her out, we deserve what we get.

Exactly. Pirro could take on Hillary on alot of issues important to NY State Yet every single piece of mail I got from her talks says "STOP HILLARY IN 2008!". I want to stop her in 2006! I'll worry about 2008 in 2007!

If we have to nominate a RINO, couldn't it at least be a RINO with charisma and smarts.

Well, if Hillary-Lite wins, then Hillary's chances for the White house are nil. But then we get into snowflakes-in-hell territory.

So far her "campaign" has been just about as competent as Jimmy Carter's Desert 1 rescue attempt for the Iranians' hostages.
