NEW YORK -- It was quite a sight in front of a multimillion-dollar Manhattan townhouse: a bloody-bearded Santa, holding a knife and the severed head of a doll -- blood gushing from its eye socket.
The eerie display popped up outside Joel Krupnik and Mildred Castellano's East 18th Street home. The couple and their three children said they are protesting the commercialization of Christmas.
Krupnik and Castellano's 16-year-old daughter, Darla, came up with the idea for the bloody Santa. The family is Jewish and non-practicing, but they say they like putting up decorations for their kids.
The girl said she based her bloody Santa display on the movie "Silent Night, Deadly Night," the New York Post reported in Tuesday's editions.
Krupnik said the figure of Santa is not in the Bible, but, rather, a piece of Americana.
In addition to the Santa with the knife, the family's outdoor display includes a tree whose bare branches are adorned with beheaded Barbie dolls.

Imagine what would happen if some christians moved to Jerusalem and on Passover put on prominent display some kind of anti-Passover display.
Can you imagine the reaction?

Krupnik said the figure of Santa is not in the Bible, but, rather, a piece of Americana. Freedom of expression, sure, they have that right in this country. But if their opinion of Santa is that he is a representative of Americana, and according to their own statements, he is and this ghastly display is their opinion of the American way of life (represented by such "Americana") perhaps this family would be happier living elsewhere.
~just my freely expressed opinion.

I agree. Must be a typo. I am from the Upper East Side. It starts at the UN or Grand Central Station if you're not calling that Turtle Bay (just north of Murray Hill where a British general chasing the Americans who snuck out of a trap in Brooklyn on a foggy night stupidly stopped to have tea with Mrs. Murray while General Washington hurried with is troops up the west side by Hell's Kitchen and the Upper West Side - enacting the 2nd of two major escapes for the Americans that could have destroyed the Revolution).

Go directly to the head of the class.
For crying out loud. Anthing below 54th is like living in New Jersey.
18th Street? Upper East Side? In your dreams.
The only thing good about an 18th street landlord is that he might permit Madonna to live in one of his walk ups.

East 18th is only one block away from Union Square, where you can find anything that is immoral, illegal and perverse. If this place were any further south it would be in Battery Park.
I used to have a place on 57th & 7th {West Side} and I'm not sure that they have yet gotten indoor plumbing on E.18th. I'm pretty sure that it is still open sewage, but the army corps of engineers is going to get on it {right after the new orleans levees}.
Oh, here come a few brickbats from ny, ny.

Good point. I've never heard any orthodox, observant Jews complain about Christmas and public displays of Christianity. The only Jews who seem to get their panties in a bunch about this stuff are atheist liberals who happen to be of Jewish descent. It makes sense. Why would Orthodox Jews - who already have their own rich traditions, spirituality, and holidays - feel threatened by a decorated spruce called a "Christmas tree" or a Americanized quasi-religious figure named Santa? Only people who already lead very empty and cold lives would get upset about such things.
