Tomorrow, you, the people of Iraq, will have a further historic opportunity to shape your political future and choose your own leaders by democratic means. Your vote will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Iraq's history.
I therefore encourage all of you to turn out and exercise your democratic right to vote as a first step towards building together a stable, united and prosperous Iraq. This is your chance to let your voice be heard as a force for peace and national reconciliation.I appeal to all to refrain from violence or any other action which might undermine the democratic process.
Ultimately, only you as a people can move Iraq forward. I am pleased that the United Nations was able to support you at every step of this process, including through our assistance throughout the year to the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq. Irrespective of the outcome of the election, the United Nations will continue to do all it can to help all Iraqis succeed in building a new Iraq.
Well done.
He also said he'd like more oil for food money, only this time they should keep it a better secret.
Nice post. ;o)
We need to have faith in a free people to vote, No matter how they vote, at least they are voting....
Wasn't it only a couple of months ago, that this 2-faced fellow said that our liberation of Iraq was ILLEGAL?
B-b-b-but, isn't our Iraq mission a failure? My, my, when scum like the UN want to take credit for stuff (and now if lots of Iraqis turn up to vote, they'll say it was because of the UN's "inspiring" message), you have to maybe wonder if the left is - gosh - wrong about Iraq...
except in the actual military invasion and overthrow of the dictator Saddam Hussein.
"I am pleased that the United Nations was able to support you at every step of this process,..."
Well, except for that 12 year period when the UN reluctantly issued resolution after resolution condemning Saddam's destructive behaviour ... but did nothing about enforcing those resolutions, and tried to stop the Coalition from rescuing the Iraqi people. While its employees embezzled Oil-for-Food money as a humanitarian crisis got worse and worse.
Except for that part, the UN has been great.
The US does all the heavy lifting and takes all the blame for mistakes, and now the UN wants to take credit for any progress ? Give me a break !
Yes. And notice, not ONE word about the United States in this statement. Somehow I feel that the Iraqis will remember America longer than they remember who Coffee Annan is/was.
Thanks, I've finally spent enough time to figure out how to search posts quick enough to get my post in first.
I am pleased that the United Nations was able to support you at every step of this process,
Bravo Sierra!
Really?
UN trying to take credit now that most of the hard work is done? Or trying to set up a new oil-for-food deal?
I guess when Norm Coleman tightened the screws, Kofi started singing a different tune.
The only thing they've supported was all the kickbacks from the OFF scandal. The UN closed up shop shortly after we liberated Iraq and ousted Saddam.
Except for that time when our building was bombed, our ambassador was killed, and we bugged out right quick.

The UN says in Dec 2005 what it should have said in Sept 2001 and which Bush, in effect, did say in 2001, post Axis-of-Evil speech.
WMDs seem really quite irrelevant.
