The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Video Comeback For Bin Laden?
Full Story

He hasn't been heard from in more than a year, but one news site reports that it has obtained a new tape of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

But U.S. officials are skeptical of the report, CBS News reports.

The story from Pajhwok Afghan News, dated Tuesday, describes a new 30-minute tape with a message from Taliban commander Mullah Dodallah and the al Qaeda leader, according to the IntelCenter, a U.S. government contractor that does work for intelligence agencies.

After the suicide of the West

It seemed fitting that a symposium devoted to the subject of “Threats to Democracy” should convene on the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. Not only was it one of the greatest sea battles in history, but it was also a battle greatly pertinent to the questions that guided our deliberations: What is the nature of the threats to democracy, to the culture and civilization of the West, and how can we best respond to those threats?

Let me say at the outset that I believe that Lord Nelson had the right idea—sail boldly in among your enemy’s ships, start firing, and don’t stop until you’ve reduced them to a shambles. It was good for England and for the rest of Europe that the Duke of Wellington proved himself to be of like mind a few years later. “Hard pounding, gentlemen,” he said at Waterloo. “We’ll see who pounds longest.”

Here's a fresh warning from N. Korea of possible attacks on S.A during the Haj.

http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200601/200601020024.html

Korea Warns of Fresh Terror Attacks in Saudi Arabia

The Foreign Ministry on Monday warned Koreans in Saudi Arabia of rumors that terrorists plan to attack large shopping malls frequented by foreigners there. In an alert posted on its website, the ministry advised Korean residents to take extra precautions and avoid leaving their homes, especially during the annual pilgrimage or Haj from Jan. 5 to 15, when 2 million Muslims from around the world descend on the oil-rich country. Those staying in Saudi Arabia or planning to visit the country during that period should take special care, the ministry said.

>>>After determined to no longer present a threat, 47 Afghan detainees were released <<<

Not smart! Several released Gitmo Afghanis have reappeared at the trigger end of AK-47's in subsequent battles in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I'd like to be optimistic but I think that Iran MUST be hit this year. Their present leadership is screwier than N.Korea. While we may not have the boots on the ground, I think that saturation bombing from our strategic forces will put sites out of action long enough to significantly slow the processes. Follow up imagery on the sites that are being repaired the quickest will point to the ones the Iranians see as most critical.

While I don't see them as being able to challenge us in the air, we'll need a lot more air assets to swat down the Iranian AF. On the other side of the issue, all H E double toothpicks will break out in the gulf as they WILL use oil shortages as a weapon. If they can stop the flow, they'll use that as leverage to force the EU against us. We'll need several carrier groups and a lot more land based air assets to pull this off. Of course, that would be kinda hard to hide and would telegraph the punch in advance.

Iranian ground force maneuvers are a concern. They could push in and try to shut off the Iraqi ports and oil facilities. They may find some sympathy in the Shiites, but that might be limited as nationalism is high and bad feelings from the past Iraq-Iran war are still high. Our ground assets are positioned for LIC and spread out. I don't think we have heavy forces positioned to meet an Iranian assault.

We will almost need a decapitation strike on the Iranian leadership and hopefully the pro-democracy forces in Iran will be ready to quick fill the vacuum and minimize external aggression.

"Terrorists Urged to Reach U.S. Targets 'Through Canada'"
The National Post ^ | January 2, 2006 | Unattributed

Posted on 01/02/2006 12:39:36 PM PST by quidnunc

"Trans-Alaska pipeline named in online manual"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: ""Jihad groups" in Canada are being urged to cross the border to carry out terrorist attacks against the United States, a Washington research group says.

A 12-page document recently posted on an al-Qaeda-affiliated Internet forum says small groups of terrorists with explosives expertise should enter the United States from Canada.

The scenario is reminiscent of the 1999 attempt by extremists in Montreal to bomb Los Angeles airport — except this time the targets are oil and gas fields, refineries and pipelines.

The port of Valdez and the Trans-Alaska pipeline are specifically named as targets: "Most of this pipeline is laying on the surface … and it passes for the most part near the highway."

The attacks should be mounted by "groups who can reach American terrorist regime, either directly or through other neighbouring countries, like Canada or Mexico," it says.

"This group should be divided into smaller groups of 4-5 individuals, who have the knowledge and skills need[ed] for explosives."

Complete with links to maps, the online manual calls itself a response to statements by al-Qaeda leaders Osama bin Laden and Ayman Al Zawahiri calling for more terrorist attacks.

It was posted recently on an Internet forum commonly used by al-Qaeda supporters, says the SITE Institute, a U.S. research group that monitors terrorist Web sites.

The scenario in which terrorists based in Canada cross into the United States has haunted both governments since al-Qaeda-trained Montreal resident Ahmed Ressam was caught at the border while on his way to blow up Los Angeles airport.

Last year, the FBI issued a bulletin warning that the Canadian border "may still provide opportunities for operatives to penetrate U.S. national security, particularly if Western passports are used."

The agency is still looking for several Canadian al-Qaeda members — notably Abderaouf Jdey of Montreal and Amer El Maati of Toronto — whom it calls a "clear and present danger to America" because they allegedly want to carry out terrorist attacks in the United States.

One of the three stated aims of Canada's national security policy is "ensuring Canada is not a base for threats to our allies" but Ottawa is sensitive to U.S. concerns about the border."

Mexico: Walls won't stop migrants
CNN ^ | 01/02/05 | AP

Posted on 01/02/2006 2:25:04 PM PST by Pikamax

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- The death of a Mexican man shot by U.S. authorities while trying to sneak into California proves that extending border walls will not curb illegal immigration, President Vicente Fox's office said Monday.

Guillermo Martinez died Saturday in a Tijuana hospital, a day after he was shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent near a metal wall separating that city from San Diego, according to prosecutors in Baja California state.

Authorities said Martinez was on the Mexican side of the border at the time, but may have picked up rocks and made motions as if to throw them at the U.S. agent.

Baja California Gov. Eugenio Elorduy said in a statement that U.S. officials were investigating the shooting. But U.S. authorities on Monday could not confirm that.

At his briefing with reporters in Mexico City, Fox spokesman Ruben Aguilar said the government "laments and condemns" Martinez's death, and is demanding an investigation.

"This occurrence does no more than provide evidence that only a law that guarantees legal entry and is respectful of human rights can resolve the migratory problem both countries face," Aguilar said.

"IDF targets Gaza vehicle; 2 killed"
YNet News ^ | Jan. 2, 2006

Posted on 01/02/2006 2:39:38 PM PST by Alouette

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Army strikes in Gaza: Air Force fires several missiles at vehicle apparently carrying Islamic Jihad members belonging to Qassam rocket launching cell; at least two Palestinians killed, one critically wounded. PM Sharon congratulates army chief, orders sustained pressure on terror groups

Gaza strike: The Air Force fired several missiles at a car traveling in Gaza's Jabaliya refugee camp Monday evening, killing at least two Islamic Jihad members apparently belonging to a Qassam rocket launching cell.

A third Palestinian sustained critical injuries and according to some reports succumbed to his wounds. Sources in the Strip said two passersby were also hurt in the strike.

The army targeted the vehicle, carrying members of the Jihad's al-Quds Brigades, around 9:30 p.m. Monday. Palestinian sources identified those killed as Sa'id Abu Jidian and Akram Ghadash, Jidian's deputy.

Following the strike, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon phoned Army Chief Dan Halutz, congratulated him for the successful operation, and asked "not to let off from the terror activists in Gaza and in Judea and Samaria even for a moment."

During the conversation, Sharon asked that an emphasis be put on operation "Blue Skies" aimed at creating an "aerial siege" over Qassam rocket launching sites in the northern Gaza Strip.

Sharon's associates are currently concerned about a new terror wave originating in the Gaza Strip, after Palestinian groups said the lull in violence has ended. According to information presented to the prime minister, security forces are dealing with 10 specific Islamic Jihad terror warnings."

Remember that Israel promised to attack Iran by the end of March? WE HAVE LESS THAN THREE MONTHS UNTILL THE “ATTACK" THRESHOLD HAS BEEN REACHED.

As you know Godzilla and ExSoldier, Iran is not Iraq. We don’t have the ground troops for a war with Iran which is what it will inevitably become. Even if a decapitation strike is successful its a pretty big "what if" counting on any support by the pro-democratic alliances inside that country. They are tolerated and that’s about it. What about Iran’s other alliances? Russia, Syria, Lebanon, the Palestinian Authority, China, North Korea, etc. The pro-democratic forces will quickly be squelched at the same time the reL attacks on Israel will begin.

Face it, we are drastically out numbered. Iran is not Iraq and Israel wont be trying to shoot down SCUDS this time. They’ll be trying to shoot down Russian and Chinese made whatever’s. Possibly even a nukeS. I’m afraid the rest of our friends will sit back and see what happens. Just like they did in Iraq. I wouldn’t count on The Brits to stick their noses out either unless it wont affect their oil.

Remember when the US helped in the miserable Iraq/Iran “war. MINIMAL success. Iraq lost!

Our efforts in Iraq may be a “success” but Iran is going to be messier by 10 fold. When the inevitable saturation bombings occur, SWHTF!

For what its worth, that’s my $0.02. Flame away . . .

"Question for the assembled peanut gallery: If we get involved in more military operations and the death toll is high, will the sheeple hold the Republicans to account at the ballot box? Will the RATS be able to get traction on this issue?"

If we hit Iran's nukes (and your're right it seems the stage is being set) what will China/Russia do and what are the odds of Marshall Law resulting (and in what regions?) Not much traction under those circumstances.
