I was listening to John Carlson on KVI coming home tonight and he had an authority on about drilling in ANWR. The authority said that there is about a 38-hour window to contact your congresscritters re voting in ANWR. IIRC he said that there was language in both the Defense Bill and the appropriation bill (sorry, don't remember specifics as I was trying to concentrate on driving downtown Seattle in rush hour - something I don't normally do).
John said he had spoken w Congressman Reichert (my Congressman) and while Dave supports drilling in ANWR, he's probably going to vote against it as the calls/email he's been receiving are 9 to 1 against drilling. I'm in his district and I find that a bit difficult to believe; however, John said that Dave told him there were a lot of 'environmentalists' in his district. While Dave votes about 90% Pubbie/conservative, given he's hearing this much from his constituents to vote against it, he apparently feels somewhat compelled to do so. I also heard that there are apparently some ads in one of the local papers encouraging folks to contact Dave regarding voting against ANWR - - so I wonder how many of those he's hearing from are actually his constituents. I will be calling his office. If you live in his district please help out w a call or email. If you don't live in his district, you may want to contact your congresscritters (I doubt it will do much good to contact Murray or Cantwell).
ANWR is an Arctic desert. I've been there. Mountains barren of trees sloping down to the Arctic Ocean. Oil seeps in many of the ponds and lakes gurgling up from down below. Passing herds of caribou - migratory animals that NEVER stay in one place longer than two weeks.
The buildings in the North Slope oilfields are built on pilings 5-6 feet above the surface to prevent snow drifts during the wild winds of Winter. I worked there for 26 years. The caribou used to stay under the buildings during the summer to avoid the insects. The musk ox used to rub on the plastic fluorescent road markers to scratch temselves because that was the tallest thing around.
THAT is EXACTLY how much development "upset" the animals. Unlike lieberals and demoncrats, animals are adaptive.
I once knew the supervisor of the drill rig that poked a hole in ANWR by directional drilling from the Inupiat village of Kaktovik. When asked what that "tight hole" discovered all he would say was: "If I were a betting man, I'd put a dollar on the oil there and I could retire."
I saw a special w Sect'y Gayle Norton a couple of years ago where she flew into ANWR. Your description reminds me of that and adds some addtional info - -it is very descriptive - Thanks!
I also heard Carlson today. 9 to 1 against was hard to swallow but I believe he is playing it RINO safe as was mentioned. I've emailed Reichert, whose district I'm in too, on the ANWR matter once already and never heard back.
