Group Calls On Fish and Game Director to Require Compliance With Government-Supported Guidelines
For Immediate Release: December 16, 2005

Concord, N.H. As part of is campaign to reduce the suffering that fish endure at the end of a hook, PETA is calling on New Hampshire Fish and Game Director Lee Perry to require everyone who applies for a fishing license to adhere to the "Code of Angling Ethics" established by the pro-fishing National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). NMFS Code of Angling Ethics lists easy-to-adopt guidelines to reduce the suffering of fish and protect their environment. Anglers are currently encouraged, but not required, to follow the code, which PETA believes must be mandatory for people who insist on catching and killing fish.
PETA points out that scientific research has proven what marine biologists have been saying for yearsfish are intelligent individuals who feel pain, just as dogs, cats, and humans do. A recent issue of Fish and Fisheries magazine cited more than 500 research papers that focus on fish intelligence, proving that fish are smart, they can use tools, and they have impressive long-term memories and sophisticated social structures. According to University of Edinburgh scientist Dr. Culum Brown, in some respects, fishs cognitive abilities surpass those of nonhuman primates.
"Just like dogs and cats, fish feel pain, so if you wouldnt hook a dog through the mouth and drag her behind your car, you shouldnt hook a fish through the mouth and drag her behind your boat," says PETAs Fish Empathy Project Manager Karin Robertson. "Because the fishing community now recognizes that fish feel pain and has guidelines that would lessen their suffering, the least that the state can do is require adherence to them."

PETA? Isn't that the bunch of Liberal, DemocRAT bozos who were going to shelters, "rescuing" cats and dogs and then killing them and throwing their remains in dumpsters?
I wonder if ted kennedy pronounces peta - petr??
any thoughts?
PETA or the fish?
As Archie Bunker used to say.... "Birds gotta fly, fish gotta fry."
This is one of the few times that I am SPEECHLESS!
What will it be next? No stomping on roaches?
too many syllables for ted to pronounce coherently
This is not a joke, it's TRUE:
Actually, I was at a library in the early 1990s and came across a PETA magazine that had an article in it detailing how to make traps -- to trap cockroaches so they could be relocated and not killed.
Of course the article never said where to relocate them. But freeper proud_yank and I are working on a plan to start trapping cockroaches and releasing them at the PETA headquarters at Virginia Beach. We hope to have a website up soon, and an address where all compassionate people can send us money. We'll keep you updated.
I'll see if I cn find an old copy of the article PETA published in some of its back issues. Although, this was probably before they were online, but I may call their office and request a back issue.
I'm going to start shooting the dang fish.
How about the ones with the little cartoon pig head that say...so help me, God..."Love Me, Don't Eat Me"?
Oh man. I don't know about these idiots. On the other hand, I did have KFC for dinner last night in their honor. Finger lickin' good too!
