GULFPORT, Miss. - U.S. Sen. Trent Lott (news, bio, voting record) says personal losses he suffered because of Hurricane Katrina will weigh on his decision whether to run for re-election in 2006.

-- snip --

Another consideration, he said, is that he is "so disappointed with the (Bush) administration's response to this disaster that I'm almost embarrassed."

No kidding. And I don't think there's be a safer open seat in the whole country. Southern states don't elect Democrat senators to open seats as long as George W. Bush is President.

How could a man who has done everything in the world to embarass himself an the GOP, ever think that Bush is an embarassment?

That's because he didn't get a free house from them! To me, he has been always a weak-kneed leader in the Senate!

I think Lott expected President Bush to persoanlly reimburse his losses. The man is a disgrace. If he decides to run again, I hope Mississippi runs someone against him in the primary and makes sure they are good, sound republicans.

Trent is a lifer. He is never going to leave, he is just trying a new fundraising tactic.

I hope you are right about that.

I should say, "Your leadership hasn't been missed." Frist isn't any better, but, then, he isn't any worse.

your Tag Line Sez it all..but I will submit that old Trent has done well for an old boy that otherwise would've been selling twice-removed used cars. Prob'ly at some Delta crossroad that even Robert Johnson run past...
I do admire his sense of frugality though as evidensed by his choice of "rugs" and polyester clothing.
All said and done; Ole Miss won't miss'em.......

Until there is a market for bad hair pieces, Trent will have to earn a living on the public teat.

Lott will stick around although his time in the sun has come and gone. He will probably end up the GOPs Bobby Byrd.

"No kidding. And I don't think there's be a safer open seat in the whole country. Southern states don't elect Democrat senators to open seats as long as George W. Bush is President."

How familiar are you with Mississippi politics?

Mississippi is 41% black, and if Trent Lott does decide not to run, the likely Democratic candidate would be Gene Taylor.

Gene Taylor, like Trent Lott, lost his home to Katrina (Taylor lived in what was formerly known as Bay St. Louis)

Taylor also voted Aye on all 4 articles of impeachment against Clinton, and in 2004, when Bush won his district with 70% of the vote, he won with 75%. Taylor has a consistent record as a maverick within the House and as a strong social conservative all around. Taylor would be a very tough candidate to beat because he would come in with the same geographic base as Trent Lott did, and it's a base that is very loyal to it's politicians. (For those really up on Southern history, South Mississippi was also Bilbo's base)

In fact, the only Republican I know of who would be competitive in South Mississippi against Taylor would in fact be Trent Lott. Winning those coastal counties is critical to running a successful Republican campaign in Mississippi.

The fact is, if Trent Lott decides not to run, the chances are very good that his seat could fall into Democratic hands, especially if Taylor was the Democratic nominee.

Lott's been bringing the bacon home to Mississippi for a long time. I'm sure he expected Katrina aid to be just another opportunity to use the taxpayers' $$ to make himself the hometown hero. Wonder if Haley Barbour would consider the Senate?

Don't be so confident. I'm from Arkansas and we were stupid enough to put Mark Pryor in there. Now we'll probably never get rid of him...we keep electing Blanch Lincoln. Aggravated with them both after the patriot act thing.
