LOS ANGELES (AP) - In the kind of funeral normally reserved for a dignitary, religious leaders and celebrities traveled to violence-wracked South Los Angeles to pay respects to the man who helped found a deadly street gang, then spent the years before his execution denouncing the gangster life.
Stanley Tookie Williams' funeral was scheduled for noon Tuesday, almost exactly a week after he was put to death for murdering four people during a pair of 1979 robberies. Williams, who in the 1970s co-founded the Crips gang not far from the church hosting his funeral, wrote from Death Row children's books warning against the gang life.
Those efforts attracted numerous supporters who lobbied frantically for clemency, arguing Williams had redeemed himself. Among those expected to attend his funeral were the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who visited Williams shortly before his death, Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan and hip-hop artist Snoop Dogg.
The service was to include a five-minute video tribute by documentary filmmaker Jonathan Stack and speeches by motivational guru Tony Robbins and actor Jamie Foxx, who portrayed Williams in the TV movie "Redemption: The Stanley Tookie Williams Story."

YAWN
Bury him before he dies? Excellent!
While at the same time directing the criminal enterprise he had created.
And Michael Corleone had his kids baptized while directing his 'business'.
Let me know when his "mourners" number more than the number who showed for Stinky Sheman's book signing in Crawford.
Where's Maxine Waters ?
I agree to disagree with those folks who are anti-death penalty and respect their point of view. Who I cannot stomach is the same old hacks who turn out in support of murderers and thugs like these Feces Pieces a la Mumia. They are not heroes, they are not worthy of lionization, they are not even people. Worthy of no respect, barely even an acknowledgement.
"to pay respects to the man who helped found a deadly street gang..."
Pathetic. But then not surprising. We already know what Hollywood respects.
This hype over Williams death and funeral is a sad (no more like infuriating) commentary on those who have and are participating in it.
Here is a person who brutally slaughtered four people using a shotgun and uttering racists epiteths over at lease some of the bodies, ridiculing the sound one dying individual was making in their last moments clinging to life.
Williams never took ownership of what he did. He never appologized.
He reportedly found redemption for writing books that sold in single or double digits. As of yet, nobody has been asked to verify that he wrote a single word of those books.
Williams never helped combat the gang he claimed to have founded. He never encouraged others to do so.
It would be hard to imagine anyone deserving the death penalty more than Williams. The actions he took during his life, affected hundreds and more than likely literally thousands due to their family members being killed, injured or adversely affected by his gang and those which sprang up due to it's inspiration.
This is what passes for some, as a hero. This is what they revere. Evidently this is what they wish their children could become.
What utter fools...
God grants each of us rights, but it sure would be nice if some people could make better choices while exercising those rights.
After this, death row will be like Forest Lawn cemetery: "People are dying to get in!"
Perhaps they can add the MSM reporting of this "significant event" to a documentary trailer for "Get Rich or Die Tryin'", given the strong relationship between the theme of the movie and this perp's life, except that the Williams' 'docutainment' might be better titled "Slaughter Bystanders Viciously for Pocket Change, and Die Tryin' To Beat The Rap"? On further thought, naah, too long for a title - - it would never get through to the people who move their lips when they read.
LOL--my freudian slip is showing...
I read where there were about 200 that paid their respects. Guess these 200 were from his "'hood".
Jonathan Stack: the perfect anti-American jackass. I am sure he will make another of his victimogrify film inditing America, once again, for being cruel, racist, brutal, etc. etc.
I was gonna go but I figured the traffic'll be murder
I read in the paper that his viewing was just down the street from where he murdered the family in the motel.
"Tookie" hated gang life...after he was put in the joint for the rest of his days. Gee, what a surprise.
You know what would be cool? If a gang fight broke out...
Shhh, they might make that the new iniation requirement: Blam! One for my peeps. Blam! One for the Honorable Elijah Mohommed. Blam! One for Brotha Tookie.
He is going to be cremated after the viewing and ashes spread in Africa!!! These loons in Los Angeles lined up to "view" the Killer's body. I am surprised the Media isn't broadcasting live, this is their kind of crap.
Tookie writing children's books against gangs is like Phillip Morris denouncing cigarette smoking.
