'Butt buses' ignite Edmonton furor =REVISITED=

Posted on Edmonton CBC News Website:

Pub's smoking bus is OK Last updated Dec 20 2005 03:27 PM MST CBC News The city has decided it's acceptable for Edmonton bars to allow their patrons to smoke on buses parked outside.

Bylaw officials have been studying the issue ever since two city bars parked converted school buses outside their premises so patrons would not have to stand outside to smoke. The tactic was a hit with customers.

* FROM DEC. 14, 2005: Bars use buses to get around smoking bylaw

John Wilson, spokesperson for the Edmonton's bylaw enforcement branch, says the buses are acceptable as long as they are "legitimate" vehicles, not simply extensions of the business.

Wilson says in the case of the Borderline Sports Pub, his officials found the bus to be a proper vehicle. He says his people are still working with the owner of another city bar, TB's Pub, to ensure their bus meets the standard.

Edmonton banned smoking in all public places as of July 1, and beginning in the new year, smoking will be banned in all workplaces in the province, with the exception of bars, casinos and bingo halls.

Not a bad idea. I have noticed more buses in front of the bars lately...

Oh, and, this:

If you think the anti-smoking Nazis will just go away now, you've got another think coming. This just means that they couldn't nail these bars under the current ordinance.

The "solution", of course, is a new ordinance that targets these buses. I'm sure Edmonton's lawyers are already working on drafting it.

Next they will put a parking meter where the bus parks.

Why did they have to get around the law? The last sentance says that bars are excepted.

I suspect that this is actually a CBC typo. The whole point of this hullaballoo is that smoking is banned in the bars! Heh.

The province will soon ban it everywhere except at bars, casinos and bingo halls. The city has already banned it in all workplaces including bars.
