"To intrude on a family over a cause of gay rights...is just pathetic," says Councilman Jerry Russell.
Russell echoes the sentiment of at least 10 others who speak out at city hall.
They`re upset over protests like one at Sergeant Edward Myers funeral last August. Protesters have said in the past that soldiers` deaths are gods retribution for America`s tolerance of homosexuals.
"You drive by these people who are dragging the flag on the ground and I just can`t imagine what the widow is going through," says JL Robertson, Director of Rupp Funeral Home.
With Monday night`s vote, council unanimously approved a bill originally sponsored by councilman Bob Boeger. The bill makes it illegal to protest at any funeral from an hour before the service until an hour afterwards.
Funeral home directors and veterans joined in support of this bill. But they know this fight may just be beginning. Many in attendance at Monday nights` meeting worry the ACLU is likely to view this action as an infringement on first ammendment rights.
"The organization you`re up against is chalk full of lawyers, they`re dedicated to what they do...you`re probably in for a lawsuit, but I just want to say you`re doing the right thing," commented one supporter.
"If they want to take us to court that`s fine, because i think that this ordinance will be backed up by the silent majority," said Russell.
Mayor David Jones said Monday the city`s attorney was confident the bill was constitutional. Whether the ACLU will take issue with the decision is still to be seen.
Of course the ACLU has to step in on the wrong side as always...
These protests are done by the Phelps clan out of Topeka Kansas. They maintain the "godhatesfags.com" website. The family is loaded with attorneys. It my be that they will handle it themselves.

Yes Yes - wolves in SHEEPS clothing - pretending to be Christians. They will all burn in hell.
No God that I know would condone what they do. A bunch of SICKOS.
Bump To The Top!
I would vote for a bubble zone. If they can have it for abortion clinics, surely they can have it for funerals.
Either that....or only allow them to hold their little disgusting protests in a locations FAR Away from the families and arrest them within say, a mile of the funeral or processional. I like your idea better though.
Good stuff here!!
Good for this council. If these protests don't fall under the fighting words exemption, I don't know what would.
I wish they would do the same for military hospitals. Ping to DC FReepers....
Or at least give us the right to kick their Pinko hides away from WR.
Thanks for the ping, Albion!
Would be nice! Unlikely, given they can't keep the pinkos propaganda off of government property.
Hi, Just --
Are you referring to the Code Pink signs stuck up in the fence at Walter Reed? I'm thinking that they get away with it because the sidewalk immediately outside the fence is public property; but if there were a "not within 100 yards" ordinance, it wouldn't be so easy for them....
Good on them! (the council)
It is a crying shame it had to come to this.
Yes. I don't care how close the "public" sidewalk is, they drape their "banners" over the fence, and now stick their anti-troop anti-war anti-American signs within the bars of federal property.
Problem is no one will make these commies adhere to the rules or the laws. Those little nuisances are just for the idiot sheeple, while the commies march forward with their agenda.
/rant It has been a long, disgusting day watching our illustrious sInate at work.
It doesn't seem right that they can hang things on the fence-federal property. No one has made a formal complaint. The hospital would have to make it and I bet they just do not want to recognize them at all.
It would be interesting if a "rule" was found that they had to be further away from the hospital. I don't think they would stop...and we would have to move....is this a "be careful what you ask for"?
