Japan 'groper' dies after fleeing

A Japanese man has died after being tackled by fellow train passengers who believed he had molested a woman during the morning rush hour.

The man fled the train at a station in the city of Osaka after a 20-year-old student accused him of groping her.

The 40-year-old was brought to the ground by four male passengers, who included at least one off-duty police officer. He died later in hospital.

Women-only carriages run on some trains in Japan because of groping complaints.

The college student accused the man of groping her on Tuesday, shortly after the train they were travelling in stopped at JR Tennoji Station in Osaka, Mainichi newspaper reported.

He ran away but was chased by four other passengers, who tackled him on the platform. "We are looking into the cause of death and details about how he was overpowered by the passengers," a police spokesman told the French news agency AFP.

Despite the introduction of penalties and women-only carriages, Tokyo police reported more than 2,000 groping incidents on the city's trains last year.

Considering how packed some subway and train cars can get there, you can wind up being an unintentional groper.

Yes, I always carried something in one hand and had the other holding the rail/ring. Watching the strained faces of passengers when the trains lurched was always humorous; people falling all over one another. Not so funny in the hot, muggy summers.

How gallant of the other passengers---rushing to the victim's aid.

" Japan is a strange, strange place. I would never want to live there. The Japanese, as a whole, basically seem to be perverts."

Call me Master Of The Obvious asn see if I care . ;) One can find strangeness in any country . And perverts abound in the USA as well . Look at Catholic priests , for example .

""Maybe the tighter the laws, the greater the obsession with sex.""
"Despite the ample historical evidence, this is something the prohibitionists never seem to get."

I don't think this is exactly on target.

Any day you can see men reading materials on the subway that would probably get you arrested in the U.S. Western-style morality laws were adopted for the sake of looking good to Westerners, not because there's any real foundation for it in Japanese history or culture.

The reason that there's more groping here than in the US is a combination of two things: more opportunity, and they can get away with it.

Most groped schoolgirls never make a peep at the time. Even women in their 20s and 30s usually remain silent.

The unusual thing about this story is that a young woman actually called the groper out.

I was riding on a train with a group that included some 20s Japanese girls and some Westerners about fifteen years ago. When we got off, one of the girls said she'd been groped. We Western males asked why she hadn't said anything, and she said she didn't want us kicking his butt and creating an incident. Typical.

There are also girls who make a practice of false accusations of groping on the train to extort cash from their victims.

If anything, sexual morality is looser in Japan. The only thing that keeps a Japanese girl from dropping her linen is fear of pregnancy or disease, or racism; no moral or spiritual considerations are involved.

Very little effort is made to crack down on enjo kosai, which is Junior High and High School girls dating older men for money, because few people really see much wrong with it.

If a 25 year old man and a 13 year old girl become lovers, prosecution is unlikely to result. Her father may demand a cash settlement from the guy, but it's pretty hard for him to get the police interested.

If somebody reports a schoolteacher, and if there's a danger that the media might go with it, the police may get off their butts and arrest him. Usually, though, these things aren't reported. These cases don't result in long jail sentences, either.

Historically, Japan has just never thought of a girl getting nailed as the end of the world, as it has been in Western Civilization. They're a lot closer to a view that it is meet and proper for girls of lower status to put out for men of higher status. And if the girl is a little timid or reluctant, well, she'll get over it.

Foreign females, of course, are by definition of lower status than any Japanese male.

A lot of the blame for this goes back to Antonio Gramsci, a major strategist of Cultural Marxism.

I got dinner at a take-out today and in the informal dining area was a Japanese-made video arcade game that previewed Kung-Fu type warfare between a (cartoon) male character and a female character. Not exactly what I'd call chivalrous. And this is certainly not limited to the Japanese. From ancient times up through modern feminism, males in most non-Judaeo-Christian cultures have either worshiped females--or more typically, sought to dominate them. And that includes, unfortunately, the hedonistic Playboy/Playgirl mindset that is 'modern' America.

Your statement, for the most part, is true based upon comparative history and anthropology.

There are many things about Japanese culture that fascinate me and other aspects of the culture that repulse me. The poor treatment of women is a feature of the culture that I find to be, at the least, unsettling.

This reminds me of an article I had read awhile back about Israeli rapists. Many of them look for Orthodox Jewish girls, who they figured would be too embarrassed to report it.

I lived briefly in Japan, married a Japanese woman, go back there to visit every couple of years, and I think you might be a bit misinformed. Feminism never really caught on in Japan and gender roles are closer there to what they were in America in the 50's, albeit with a lot more sexuality and promiscuity, but on the whole Japanese women aren't treated badly at all. They aren't forced to wear a burkha, the streets are safe, they have pretty much the same freedoms as the rest of the western world and Japanese men aren't monsters either.

It's true that Japanese porn is heavy on the bondage and S&M, but German porn is just as bad if not worse and no one talks about the poor treatment of German women.

Thanks for the info. My comment was imprecise and I apologise for that. I meant to reference the sexuality in Japanese society. I enjoy Anime, but there is much of it that I cannot watch because of the imagery involving horrible things that happen to women. I also say the same thing about American horror movies that are usually a misogynistic bloodfest.
