Last night I believe the senate approved a 6 month extension.

Yeah, and that made the House come back into session after they were released to go home.

So they retaliated by making the Senate return to OK the 5 wk deal.

Ying/Yang

Yeah, they did. The House today rejected that, and instead opted for a 1 month extension. The House I believe wants a timely debate rather than having to go with a 6 month extension, which would theoretically be nothing more than kicking the tin can further down the road to be dealt with later. Either way, Congress is going to have to tackle the issue.

I'm getting so confused with all this. Now according to FNC apparently there's another vote tonight. It's enough to drive one to drinking cooking sherry.

It's all so disgusting and unfair. Carter and Clinton can do what they want, spy on who they want, listen to who they want....and there was no war.

When President Bush needs those capabilities because we're at war they tie his hands and restrict him.

FOX NEWS just reported 5 minutes ago the House has just voted to RENEW the Patriot Act and now goes to the Senate.

Now they're just dickering over the length of the time extension. News report I heard was expiration around the first week of February.

Yep. Should be interesting to see how things pan out in the Senate tonight. I'm hoping to see some fireworks.

When President Bush needs those capabilities because we're at war they tie his hands and restrict him.

In a roundabout way, I think that's the message from the House.

Just WHAT "rights" have YOU personally lost due to the Patriot Act?

Do you happen to be a gun owner?

Well, before this happened the WH said he would veto any temporary extension. Guess they changed their mind when that threat didn't have the desired effect...

"Just WHAT "rights" have YOU personally lost due to the Patriot Act?"

Even though this question wasn't raised to me, my answer is: None. Zilch. No law-abiding U.S. Citizen has been affected by the Patriot Act. (only protected).

Only the 'bad guys' are sweating. The way it outta be.

Just got around to reading this thread tonight. I'm amazed and disgusted at the number of jackboot lickers on here. I wonder. . .do any of these people understand the meaning of the words "slippery slope?"

I'm with you.

I mean, we are at war, right? Asking questions or expressing concern about any government policy only lends aid and comfort to the enemy.

The War on Terror will never, ever, ever be won.

It is impossible to claim victory when you are fighting covert groups of what could include as few as one person, and maybe as many as 20.

So is this how we will live forever? Remember 1984 and the perpetual war? Your statement proves the fact that we will be herded into giving up our rights for a never ending war.

Our thinking is being changed that somehow we don't need our rights and that giving more power to the government to police the state is O.K.

I'm not a bomb thrower but there could possibly be a day that Orwell's book could be a threat to national security.

You think what you do is fine and legal now but if the government decides to change what is legal then you may not be happy with the power you gave them so freely in your time of fear.

So instead of fearing of an attack on our buildings we will be in fear of a warrantless raid on our home where they take you in secret and hold you indefinitely without the ability to seek council or a judge. The Patriot Act allows this exact thing to happen in America. And you think this is O.K.?

You aren't very familiar with my posting history on this forum, are you? ;-) I was simply responding like most FReepers.

I have said before that Uncle Sam poses more of a threat to our liberties than Uncle Osama. But we have become a nation of wimps. The phrase "Give me liberty, or give me death" has been replaced with "Thank you, sir, may I have another?"

My apologies. I was unsure of your sarcasm.

It seemed sarcastic but lately at FR it's hard telling.

Happy New Year!

I know what you mean. When I posted this bit of satire, people thought it was serious.
