Here Are The Results of SurveyUSA News Poll #7876

Geography Surveyed: New York DMA

Data Collected: 12/21/2005
Release Date: 12/21/2005 8:40 PM ET
Sponsoring News Organization: WABC-TV New York

Half in NYC with Union, Half with Management: Two-thirds of New York City area residents say transit workers should not have gone on strike, according to a SurveyUSA poll of 800 metropolitan area adults conducted 12/21/05 exclusively for WABC-TV. But: when Tri-State adults are asked to choose sides in the debate, half say they are with the Union, half say they are with Management. By 5:4, New Yorkers approve of NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg's handling of the strike. 47% say the $1 million a day fine levied against the Union is too much. 53% say Union leaders should be fined personally. By contrast, 33% say striking workers should be fined. 26% say Union leaders should be jailed. 24% say striking workers should be fired and replaced.

Data Collection: 800 adults were interviewed from New York City Metropolitan Area, including 45% of respondents from the 5 boroughs of New York City and 55% of respondents from surrounding counties in Northern New Jersey, Fairfield County CT and Westchester, Rockland, Nassau and Suffolk counties, NY.

Looks like the polls are swaying away from the union's favor. The union is still supported by more New York City residents than management (48%-39%), even though 77% of New York City Residents say they've been personally affected by the strike. More suburbanites support management than the union (51%-40%). This isn't surprising - most New York City residents are liberal. And only half of polled persons who are members of a union support the union.

When the union versus management question was asked by Survey USA yesterday (the first day of the strike), 52% of New York Metro area residents supported the union (versus 40% management). Union support has eroded, likely because people have been inconvenienced, the New York City media has been very critical of the union's position, and TWU leader Toussaint doesn't come across well on television.

Survey USA's Cross-Tabulations are near the bottom of the page, for those who want to dig deeper.

I still don't get the dichotomy.

As if people can't dislike Kalikow et. al. and yet still be infuriated at the TWU.

Even straphangers who aren't mind-numbed liberal robots aren't thrilled with MTA management.

They need to commission another survey.

Reasons why Public Transit is less than ideal compared to private transportation:

1. Transit Strikes
2. Unions
3. Inflexible schedules
4. Terrorism (target)
5. Inflexible destinations
6. Being transported *with* the Public (as in "the masses")

I do agree that the general message is accurate though.

There are too many people in this city whose livelihood depends on the public sector-or who are simply reflexively statist-to do any real damage to the TWU, bad public relations notwithstanding.

Whoa....

New Yorkers deserve the liberal results of the economic mess they will be in! I now have NO sympathy for New Yorkers and their loss of income. BTW, I hope the gas prices go thru the roof now that Anwar is dead. You want liberal LaLa Land...live in it!

there is no way a place like NYC could run without mass transit.

I don't think they need to commission another survey (but this is a tracking poll - so there should be one tomorrow). I think they need to ask a slightly differently-worded question 1, or at least add a big NEITHER option to the question 1. The last 8 questions weren't asked yesterday, but should have been, so there's no tracking data. I guess they didn't have the time.

Survey USA is a pretty decent polling outfit. They were one of the most accurate (some would say the most accurate) at predicting state-by-state results in the 2004 Presidential election.

Liberals love the idealistic, La La Land communist, eco ideas without thinking. Whether its "Unions are ALWAYS good" and "Oil drilling is always bad eco wise" libs stick to their un thought out romantic notions.

Toussaint had a 20 minute press conference today that if it ever saw the light of day on NYC's all Bloomie all the time media, would find Mr. Bloomberg being run out of town on a rail. And Touissaint did it without raising his voice or calling Bloomberg a thug.

I find it hateful when Dems use class warfare to increase their approval numbers, and I find it just as hateful to use a different version of class warfare in this case. Every time Bloomie harps on what the transit workers have that private workers don't it creates the same poisonous climate as Gore and Moore do. The TWU earned its bounty in the world of NYC collective bargaining.Don't try to take it from them by feeding jealousies and envy among those who have less. We decry such rhetoric here on FR every time a demogogic Dem spouts the us vs them. Here it's Bloomie spouting them vs you.

I would love to see more questions about Roger Toussaint.

He has to be one of the least sympathetic labor figures since the last president of the Teamsters.

I'm amazed that the reporters didn't break into hysterics when that jackass compared their walkout to the struggle of Rosa Parks to integrate Montgomery buses.

I support Kalikow all the way. Based on his campaign contributions, I'd say this guy is all about good judgement!

its the TWU that feels that because someone, anyone they can point the finger at, who works in the private sector in NYC that makes more then they do - that they are somehow entitled to take that money from them for themselves.

the union is all about class warfare, its in every argument they have made. every word out of their mouth is "this city has so many rich people".

Bloomberg's observations about the deal on the table for this union, versus other city unions, or what private sector people are facing in terms of pension and medical co-pays - are 100% factual.
