Since all these vehicles are sitting idle, along with the subways....who is gaurding the parked buses and trains or cruising the tunnels watchin for 'bad guys'?

Call in the National Guard and start training them in how to operate the Subway. You'll have the workers back on the job by lunchtime!

This is for future workers, not current ones. The unions in NY are no different than welfare-lite cases. They want more and more and more in return for less and less and less.

The MTA is a joke, of course, but that does not give the right for these greedy slobs to shut down the city and hurt the small businessman.

I say give them 24 hours to get to work or they are fired.

But don't you that firing "union workers" might cost Mr. Pataki some votes when he runs for President in 2008?

All this occuring at Christmas shopping time. A lot of businesses depend on making 30-50% of their yearly sales during this time of year in order to stay in business. It sadly appears that many will not be in business for another Christmas. This is an economic 9-11 to them.

The MTA gives away its record surplus on eBay! then makes a pension demand which would cost new workers 4% of their income, at a time of record prosperity in NYC. Peter Kalikow should be fired along with Roger Toussant. This strike was totally unneccessary and both sides are equally to blame.

I disagree, because I think NYC needs NEW transit workers who are less greedy than the ones we have.

If 10,000 workers show up, then only 20,000 positions need to be filled with new workers.

As a practical matter, this means that some bus service and some subway service (like the "A" line and the "4" line) could be restored immediately. The rest could be restored as soon as operators became trained -- based on the former traffic volumes of those lines.

Let's see how long it takes our "brave leaders" to figure this out...

Maybe Pataki could threaten to fire them, starting with bus drivers first. National Guard could operate the buses and the subway workers would be next if they did not end the strike...buying a little time.
As a quasi-agency, are the salaries of these workers paid by the taxpayers? Personally I don't think that anyone whose salary is taxpayer-funded should be allowed to be in a union (and I'm a former teacher).

Those getting hurt live in the suburbs...but you must include those living in the city as well. The strike hurts everyone...still, no remorse here...when you lie down with dogs, you get fleas.

I find it hard to sympathize with ANYBODY suffering up there. There are maybe 1.25 people in the entire city (maybe a dog or cat, too) who are not slavishly devoted to EVERYTHING union. You want unions, you like unions, well, pay the price.

I live here, and you would be surprised how many left-wingers would volunteer to serve on Toussaint's firing squad.

The unions destroyed the car industry, drove business overseas and now they're going after our best known city? What's Hillary got to say?

New York if packed with illegal aliens. Put them to work.

The left (including Bloomberg the Rino) appear addicted to union money but are ironically blind to the fact that illegals undercut union jobs. Without the unions there would be no illegals problem.

I live on the edge of the city. Pizzerias are hurting because of this, diners, etc etc.

Your lack of sympathy to small businesses is very typical of many on FR who care nothing what goes on in NY regardless of the fact that GWB got more votes from NY than he got in probably 5 "Red" states combined.
