Omedalus (I'm back from lunch and here are your own words):

Thank you (to: proud republican woman). I, too, am greatly annoyed at some people's tendencies to tell me that my personal choices are "immoral" . . . I believe that the attempt by third parties to interfere with the choices of rational, intelligent, mutually consenting adults is simply ignorant, and definitively non-conservative. And, no, I myself am not part of a swinger's club, though I don't care who is or isn't . . .

How does kidnapping, rape, and murder of a child have anything to do with adults getting together in sex clubs? I mean, how is one even remotely related to the other?

[After I explained how, you proceeded to equate deviant sexual behavior with the rights guaranteed under the 2nd Amendment:]

I go to the range all the time, and meet and talk to people there. If someone I met at the range were to kidnap, rape, and kill my daughter, I wouldn't blame my participation in the range . . . I don't care about adults hooking up with each other at sex clubs . . .

[Even if it results in the kidnapping, rape, and murder of children.]

Any questions?

Any questions? Yes.

1) You completely ignore my assertion that criminals exist in all social arenas, and the fact that a criminal may be a member of a particular group does not, in and of itself, automatically incriminate the group as a whole. As an illustration, I suggested the possibility that there could be a rapist at my gun range. If I understand correctly, the reason you feel justified in dismissing my illustration is that a gun range is a place to exercise my 2nd Amendment rights, whereas a sex club is a place to exercise "deviant sexual behavior". Now, mind you, I don't give a lick about whether a particular behavior is "deviant" or not; some would say my enjoyment of shooting holes in targets is deviant. What I DO want to know is, aside from the fact that you find it "deviant", what exactly is it about their behavior that you believe makes them more likely to meet a potential kidnapper/rapist than at my gun range?

2) By the same token, what is it about their behavior that you believe puts their child at greater risk than she would have been otherwise? What's the cause-and-effect sequence that results in harm to their child that is inherently dependent on their participation in that club - i.e. a cause-and-effect sequence that ISN'T equally plausible at a gun range?

Look, it's entirely reasonable for you to say that you personally don't trust parents who would go to a swinger's club. You can have all sorts of mental associations with such imagery, and believe - perhaps even legitimately - that participation in a swinger's club makes them more likely to be bad parents. However, I argue that there is no causative relationship between being a bad parent and being a member of a swinger's club - that is, you're not AUTOMATICALLY one just because of the other - and that their behavior in no way contributed to the horror that befell their daughter.
