The Hillary-Condi avalanche

By Salena Zito

TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Sunday, January 1, 2006

Curb your enthusiasm and fasten your seat belts; today marks the first day of Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential bid.

This is a moment of glee in many camps. Others are observing a moment of silence with a primal scream quickly to follow.

Yes, let the mockery begin: The Clintons are back and open for business. And according to Dick Morris, the Clintons' one-time confidant, the only person who can stop Hillary is Condoleezza Rice.

If you look just at the demographic argument for Condi's candidacy, Morris' theory is flawless. Taking white men out of the equation -- the results among white men in '08 will be pretty similar to '04 -- the real issue is swing suburban women and minorities.

Morris explains it like a simple math equation:

"Hillary has an attractiveness to white women that is extraordinary. And I think that she gets the usual Democratic support from blacks and Hispanics.

"I think that the only way to stop Hillary from winning is by running someone that will appeal to women and take that black vote away from her."

That someone would be Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a woman who probably has the best personal story to tell of any modern political figure since Ronald Reagan.

But it's not all demographics, Morris says. "Condi is a woman that has made it on her own, whose accomplishments are hers." Hold that up to Hillary, whose "accomplishments are entirely derivative of her husband's," making even the National Organization of I-don't-know-what-kind-of-Women wince.

The potential exists that America will have in front of it two models of feminine advancement -- one dependent on a husband, the other independent. Morris may be on to something when he says "the Condi Rice model...

IMHO, I would like to see Condi as the VP candidate. The real question for me is who does she run with.

As for she-who-shall-not-be-named, I just don't see it happening, never have.

I could never see Bill Clinton as President, but it happened. I'd LOVE Condi on the ticket. But I see no problem with her as President, it would also give the GOP a long lasting political boost. First Black Woman, and we dont have the "First Husband" problem to solve, noone wants Billy back in the WH.

I'm still not buying hitlery as a shoe-in. No way. She has too many negatives and I don't think she can overcome them to win a majority of votes. I am also not buying a 3rd party candidate, paid for by the clintonistas. Mcvain isn't stupid...he will not risk his senate majority committees and position to run as the 3rd party (indie) candidate just to enable hitlery to win. What would that get him? Nothing.

Condi won't run, IMO. It's still early and George Allen is the only one I really like thus far. I'm holding out for Allen, the only conservative in the bunch.

The Conservatives need to change their mindset. Instead of just writing HC off as unwinnable, they better start acting like she is the most formidable foe they have ever faced --- because she will be.

HC wants the WH and she will do whatever it takes to get there. Conservatives need to act accordingly, or they will be replacing the Kerryites on the therapists' couches in January 09.

Hillary is running.
She is running hard and strong.
And so far, the competition both within her party and within the opposition party appear weak in comparison.

Are you saying that because he'd be facing Hillary!, or do you think that only a man could be a "decent candidate?" Just want to be clear.

I'm not a fan of Condi as a presidential candidate, but I have no problem with voting for a conservative woman for any office. My problem with Condi isn't her sex, it's her politics.

A man to run against Hillary...

Sad to say, I can't think of anybody Republican that inspires enthusiasm. Character will be the difference, and the only Republicans with character are quite "moderate". /pessimism

Running Condi Rice against Clinton will give Hillary her best shot at winning. I'm not running down Ms. Rice, I think she is absolutely brilliant, however, I don't believe the nation is necessarily prepared for a woman at this time.

I believe there are enough bigoted men in the Democratic party that will cross over and vote GOP or not vote at all to simply end Hillary's chances period.

If it's Condi vs. Hillary then the 'woman factor' is completely removed from decisions, and the electorate will break even GOP vs. DEM in the good ole traditional 50/50 split we've seen lately. Worse yet are the bigots that I'm sure exist in the GOP that won't vote for Condi because she's black.

Putting a woman against Hillary is simply a want of a cat fight, it doesn't make sense if you are wanting to win in politics.

Well there might be a conservative or two with character, but does anyone know them outside of conservative Republican circles?

I agree with that. Dr. Rice is too much of a political unknown.

I remember early in the 00 election cycle, many were touting and hoping Colin Powell would run. Why? Because he wasn't Al Gore. After Powell's stint as SoS, many are glad he didn't run for the Oval Office.

Dr. Rice has never been through an election. Elections can be dirty affairs. They have destroyed many good people.

The nomination is HRC's for the asking and if we don't get ready for it we're the fools. Anyone who believes she will not be the nominee can't do political math. Anyone who thinks she can't win needs to listen to those brain dead people that Hannity has interviewed on the streets. Young women don't care what her politics are, she doesn't have a penis and that's all that matters to them.

The problem with Condi is that she has never run for any office in her life. She has no campaign background, and her speeches typically have been on real world events and diplomacy. She would have to hire someone to manage every single detail of the campaign from scratch and trust them completely. She also is an intellectural and not a down-to-earth person as you might get with Ronald Reagan or GW. So its a tough run, on the very first day.

The positive side...is that she can portray herself as the little Birmingham girl who did the right things, went to college, stayed away from bad influences...and made her parents proud. She can inspire blacks and turn them from the Democratic party. She has the potential to turn college kids her direction by answering questions directly and not pumping out political jargon (as Hillery would do). And the funny thing is...she has no baggage whatsoever...in total difference to Hillery with her investing episode, Bill & his women, and the temper fits.

Exactly! She's a media creation..nothing but a phony lying presidential wannabe. I just don't see how she can make people forget that she is totally unlikeable and negative. LOL

Condi will be a slam dunk if she does the debates with Hilary in all the languages she knows. It would show how much smarter she is then the beast.
