Speciality stores are putting a major dent in Wal-Mart's profits, IMO. Wal-Mart used to get away with having "everything" so that customers can just pick up what they need there and don't have to run around town. But consumers have more disposable incomes now - plus there's online shopping - so they're shopping at the speciality stores. There's stores for cookware, sporting goods, electronics, health and beauty, etc. Pretty soon people will just go to Wal-Mart to pick up staples such as toilet paper and regular groceries. Even in groceries Wal-Mart can be beat. There's a Woodman's grocery store that is absolutely kicking Wal-Mart's ass.

I saw a lot of specialty stores on line but I wasn't comfortable giving personal information out.

But you have no problem giving your credit card to some cashier at a brick-and-mortar?

Online shopping is a lot safer than regular shopping, and it's more convenient. Plus most credit cards have zero-fraud liability.

(P.S. - a good website for shopping is Overstock.com. They got some great deals).

I agree with you on the salmon. Always buy wild salmon. Farm-raised salmon is bunk.

Actually,I'm kind of in a rut. I haven't been anywhere but Walmart lately and try to pay cash or check.

And for the really good deals, try the Sears repair centers. If the box is damaged they'll sometimes mark it down as much as 40 percent.

You're right about the meat. The beef is terrible. It smells nasty cooking. Then again, I spent a few years in a meat market.

The prepackaged stuff sold anywhere is probably going to be terrible. They get it packaged from the packing plant, which, to maximize profit, will throw whatever is lying around into it, so long as it's beef. Always remember, hoof is beef. ;-)

The best will be grocers who still grind their own from scraps.

Walmart did have Butterball chickens. I think they were injecting them with turkey broth. You bite into one expecting chicken and get a wierd turkey/chicken amalgam.

But compare the clothes at Chico's FAS to Wally World.>>>>

I don't think we have Chico's in this area, at least I am not familiar with it.

Why does it have to be that "everything" is bad, "america is evil" and "the sky is falling"? A 2 percent increase is an increase alright. It sucks. That's the reality. I'm sure you want to spin it anyway possible, but, it sucks. It's what I expected to see from Walmart and others. But, I'm sure you'll tell us how this is a sign that the economy is "strong" in relative terms and possibly even "booming"; but, let's not get carried away. Some of us here prefer the absence of pep talks that mischaracterize facts. Pep talks that deal with the facts are fine. There is less money in the economy than there used to be because a lot of jobs left this nation. Less money means fewer purposes. Perhaps you should take some courses in remedial math or just choose to face up to facts. It's simple. Less money means less purchasing. Say it with me. You can do it.

LOL, didn't know patriotism extended to support of Walmart. But, I guess the worldview of the treason lobby is a little maladjusted through those lenses..

Really? How's that? If America loses jobs because of Walmart which it never recovers and money is lost from the economy along with losing productivity from members of society that would otherwise be productive, is that good, or is that somethng we plug our noses and avert our eyes from to maintain the tautology? Just wondering.

I don't think we have Chico's in this area, at least I am not familiar with it.

Fairly high-end women's clothes, comparable in price to nicer stuff at Dillard's, Macy's, but better quality. They tend towards classic looks.

I mentioned Chico's since women's clothes tend to cost more than men's so quality is more important. My example of the blue jeans was just how I discovered how name brands sometimes DO matter.

And about the topic of this thread, I think Wally World not making same-store-sales goals is because with the economy and jobs recovering, people are moving back to higher-end stores.

Cheers!

America never loses jobs because of Walmart.

Americans change jobs because companies fail to maintain competetiveness. There is no loss of jobs..... the economy is growing at 4%.

Don't believe the old media.

Dear The South Texan,

"Could it be that people are shopping at other retailers and online?????????"

I suspect that on-line retailing had something to do with it.

I didn't buy as much from Wal-Mart as I have in past years. Though I probably spent more, I shopped a lot more on-line, in stores that have a better selection, or bought items that Wal-Mart doesn't carry.

Cheers! If the quality is there then the higher price is justified, it just seems that an awful lot of people don't know how to judge the quality of anything, I see many who will buy the product from one store but refuse to buy the exact same thing at a lower price from another store. And there are so many things, appliances are one good example, that are sold under a half dozen different brand names for the same product made in the same factory.
