Flutie converts NFL's first drop kick in 64 years

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (Jan. 1, 2006) -- Doug Flutie added another oddity to his football résumé when he converted a drop kick in the fourth quarter of the New England Patriots' game against the Miami Dolphins.

It was the league's first drop kick since the 1941 NFL championship game, according to the web site for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

With starting quarterback Tom Brady sitting out most of the season-ending game, backup Matt Cassel threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Tim Dwight to cut Miami's lead to 25-19 with 6:10 left in the game. Flutie, who was listed as the No. 3 QB, came in for the extra point and lined up at quarterback.

After a timeout, Flutie took the snap, dropped the ball and kicked it off a short hop through the uprights for one point. He ran off the field and embraced coach Bill Belichick.

According to the Hall of Fame site, Chicago's Ray "Scooter" McLean converted the last drop kick in the Bears' 37-9 victory against the New York Giants on Dec. 21, 1941.

What was the reason for the drop kick instead of a conventional extra point kick or going for a 2 point conversion?

backup Matt Cassel threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Tim Dwight

Another interesting tidbit in this article... Matt Cassel was the back-up QB to Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC... He completed a grand total of 20 passes in his NCAA career and never threw a touchdown pass in college.

I saw it...Why? I would have been more impressed if he'd thrown it left handed through the goal posts. A hasbeen making a rare play = Much air time on news channels. Miami still won, so I am happy.

The last drop kick I saw was Childress, Texas HS against Burkburnett, Texas HS in 1967. Burkburnett kicked one against Childress.

I find Flutie much less annoying than Tom Brady... much, much less.

Why didn't they just kick an extra point?

Flutie is going to retire and it was a nice gesture by Bill Belichick to let him "score" on what very well may be his last career play.

Cool. I have never seen the "fair catch kick" rule evoked either. You know, at the end of the quarter if a player calls a fiar catch with no time left, the team can elect to get a free kick.

The Dallas Cowbows actually used that rule once back in the 1970's.

Maybe they wanted to go for a two point conversion and there was just no way to make it happen.

Hillary or no Hillary, I have been a fan of Doug Flutie ever since the day he threw the Hail Mary Pass in Miami bringing Boston College to victory over the Hurricanes with 6 seconds left in the game. The pass was caught by Gerard Phelan.

Flutie ended up with the Patriots this year, which is fitting for the guy.

Go Doug!! I still love you.

Boston College...a football program the defines itself by several upset victories but with no real success in its own right.

In a "punt or drop-kick" the objective is the extra point or a field goal or kicking downfield in the fourth down? Which? For a field goal or an extra point they set the ball. In a fourth down the kicker receives the ball from the center and kicks it to the other team.? I'm really trying to understand the significance of this.

With your nick and knowledge, I assume you're a fellow Trojan and already realize the following, which I state for others: the Patriots' drafting of Cassell, in light of his nearly nonexistent college experience, simply illustrates SC's incredible depth.
