Okay, that makes sense. Eisenhower, Nixon, and Reagan picked up votes there. I was trying to explain why so many Northeasterners and Catholics are more ambivalent or conflicted about politics now and why some Reagan voters went back to the Democrats. I assumed it had to have a lot to do with history -- with Democrat parents or grandparents and traditional ties. I've met people in real life who had such family ties and found it hard to break with ethnic traditions.
That's probably not the whole story, of course, maybe not even the biggest part. Current issues, personalities, and attitudes are also important -- or else Alabama and Mississippi would feel the same tug from the Democrat past.
I've seen O'Reilly on television for over 20 years now and thought I had a pretty good handle on him. He was different from other anchors and commentators and seemed more like the "neighborhood guys" that I was familiar with in real life. After his sexual harassment scandal, though, I have to admit that I really don't know him after all.
I read that Private Media Group is releasing a parody of Bill O Reilly next month. It's gonna be called 'God's Will' and will be shameless ;)
