Area’s top name of ’05? Ethan, baby
La Crosse Tribune ^ | January 4, 2006 | TERRY RINDFLEISCH

Parents of newborns at La Crosse’s two hospitals were likely to write down the names Ethan, Madeline, Samuel, Austin, Haley or Emma when filling out birth certificates in 2005, hospital officials said Tuesday.

Madeline was the No. 1 girls’ name, while Ethan easily was the top choice for boys, with twice as many Ethans as Samuels and Austins, the second most popular boys’ names. Ethan was the top baby name, boy or girl.

Although Madeline was the No. 1 choice for girls at Franciscan Skemp, Haley was by far the most popular girls’ name at Gundersen Lutheran.

Ethan was the No. 1 boys’ name at Gundersen Lutheran, while Austin and Benjamin were the most popular boys’ names at Franciscan Skemp.

Olivia, the most popular girls’ name in 2004, dropped to a tie for seventh with Emily. Jacob, which was last year’s No. 1 boys’ name and the top boys’ name for many years, fell to No. 7.

Also making the top 10 list for the second straight year were Madison, Haley, Emma, Grace, Mason, Aiden and Andrew. New to the top 10 list were Ava, Ella, Abigail, Cole, Connor and Cameron.

Other popular names at Franciscan Skemp were Alayna, Kylie, Alyssa and Neveah. At Gundersen Lutheran, other popular names were Lillian, Anna, Caleb and Taylor or Tayler.

According to BabyCenter LLC, Aidan and Emma were the top baby names in the nation in 2005. BabyCenter has the largest private database of names in the U.S.

The year I was born my name was the big one. I had seven classmates in my first grade class with the same name.

Half the boys in the room would look when the teacher called one of us. Strangely, I still remember all of them to this day.

I've seen a similar Giani pronounced Johnny. Ekaterina is a somewhat common eastern Euro name, but Shqavianna will be a lifelong handicap for the kid.

How interesting. Emma and Grace are both on this list. My grandmother was an Emma, and one of her sisters was a Grace. Things do seem to go in cycles.

A colleague at work has one daughter named Emma and one named Grace. I know several little girls with "Claire" in their name (either first name or middle name), and several little boys named Ethan.

It's nice to see traditional names coming back into style. Apologies to anyone here, but I was never fond of "Ashley" or "Heather."

Also apologies from me but I don't like Madison. A radio guy was calling some local politician the other day Carol Morgan turns out her name was actually Morgan Carroll.

I think naming kids popular names should be avoided, although I think oddball spelling of any name is an equal curse to a child. I was stuck with a name (Susan) that was very common when I was born and I swore I wouldn't do that to my child. My husband wouldn't let me name our daughter what I wanted to (Spring), however, and she ended up with a more common name (Dawn) than I would have chosen, although she really only once shared a name with someone else that she knew, a girl in her Sunday school class for a couple of years. Then, when she had her son, I tried to convince her and her husband not to name him the name they had chosen because it was way too common, but they ignored me and now he is stuck with what turned out to be the most common boy's name (Tyler) the year he was born.

When I hear the name Morgan, I think horse, and when I hear Madison, I think dead president.

I noticed that a lot of the names go back to some of the old names. I don't care for many of them, but it's an interesting trend.

Another thing I find odd; a lot of names that I have really liked at one time were because they were names that I'd "made up" (I used to do that a lot when I was a kid) or that I'd never heard, but liked the sound of, and now a lot of them are quite common.

"Apologies to anyone here, but I was never fond of "Ashley" or "Heather."

I really liked the name "Heather" at one time, but I'm very glad I never named a kid that. It is one of the most common names in the circle of people I deal with, both as coworkers and clients. It gets very confusing at times.

Two names that I cringe at (brought to mind because of your screenname) are Kelly and Jessica. They are two of the most common names I see among abusive/negligent parents. My apologies if that is your real name.
