WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- U.S. Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito has received a "well qualified" rating from the American Bar Association.
The ABA Wednesday said its 15-member Standing committee voted unanimously, with one recusal, to give Alito the group's highest rating.
The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee is set to convene hearings on Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court Tuesday. President George Bush selected Alito to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who said in July she wished to retire.
Abortion rights activists, environmental rights supporters and minority groups have expressed concern about Alito's nomination based on his previous writing.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, in what the party described as a nationally distributed op-ed article, said, "There are simply too many writings in Judge Alito's record currying favor with the extreme right which show a willingness to favor government power over individual liberties."
Did anyone expect anything less?
The liberals will still fight tooth and nail against confirmation, because this is showdown time at the OK Corral, but this will make it a little harder for them.
They'll just have to tell their friends in the MSM not to mention this unfortunate factoid to the great unwashed public.
"Abortion rights activists, environmental rights supporters and minority groups have expressed concern about Alito's nomination based on his previous writing."
Typical knee-jerk reaction. The ABA's "well qualified" rating of Alito will cause some heartburn on the looney left.
Oddly I have not seen too much outrage from the left yet. If they really wanted to stop Alito the campaign should have started a long time ago.
And what is that recusant? A party to some lawsuit currently before Alito?
Can't wait for the hearings!
The usual suspects in the senate will pretend to put up a fight. But they won't. Not really.
Have you seen the schedule for the hearings and the list of witnesses/panels yet?
Well, since Bush put his foot down and basicly told the ABA to go F--- itself with its biased ratings (http://www.calbar.ca.gov/calbar/2cbj/01apr/page10-1.htm), the ABA has straightened up.
That's nice, but who cares?
What does the Federalist Society say - - that's what matters.
Only this ...

Roberts was 3 days, withe the witness panels the last day, and I believe they were annoucned the night before..IIRC, Arlen was all over the tube the week before...he's been very quiet..
If it's a walkover, that's fine by me. But everyone thought that putting ANWR on the military budget would make it a shoe-in, and look what happened.
The Alito confirmation is one we can't afford to back down on.
It only shows the country that the DIMs can't be trusted for serious matter.
must be a brain f*rt moment!!!
At least the ABA isn't Borking him.
More of a computer burp.
Yes. They have consistently downgraded conservative appointments. It must have galled them to have no choice but to issue this rating.
They would have KILLED miers. Best she could have hoped for is qualified.
