Did Abramoff Make Contributions In His Own Name To Democrat Politicians?
1/4/06 | mwfsu84

My understanding is that while Democrats certainly recieved money from the Abramoff PACs, liberals and the MSM (redundant, I know) are contending it's the direct contribution from Abramoff that are illegal. Using that criteria, the lists I've seen show contributions to GOP leaders only.

Anyway, this is where the battle line will be drawn. We've either got to find lists of Congressional Democrats who recieved money DIRECTLY from Abramoff, or contend that ALL money recieved from Abramoff, either directly or through PACS, is illegal.

I'd appreciate some help from Freepers who know more on this subject than I do - which I'm sure is the majority of folks out there. Thanks in advance.

I did look at Open Secrets. Unfortunately, all of the individual contributions listed in Abramoff's name went to Republicans.

They are drawing those lines now. First Harry Reid, and now Patty Murry are refusing to returns donations because they "don't know" Abramoff and haven't received "one dime from him."

No one is claiming that it was illegal for Abramoff to make campaign contributions to members of Congress, either directly or through PACs. What Abramoff has agreed to plead guilty to is paying campaign contributions with the explicit understanding that the recipient would do a specific thing in return-- the legal distinction between campaign contributions (legal) and bribes (illegal). Whether he bribed only Republicans, or Republicans and Democrats alike, remains to be seen.

Thank you, PJ. Do you have a source for that?

Interesting to note that my congress critter, Jim Moran (appropriately named) is so uninfluential that he didn't receive any money from Abramoff.

OR,.......

We could just relax because Abramoff will do more on his own to bring down Democrats than we could ever do. Do bother trying to fight media perception, nobody trusts them anymore anyway.

Only if he thinks they have no chance of being the next
Admin. Notice that there's been no mention of Hillary.
Now that could be because she managed to avoid this dude,
or it could be because Jack is resisting giving up info
that could doom any chance that the White House Pardon
Sales Office would re-open under President Hillary.

Abramoff is seeking no pardon and has already done his damage, prior to his guilty plea. The Feds already know at whom he is pointing the finger.

There is not going to be a Hillary administration, and FReepers should know better by now.

Hadn’t thought of that.

Seems like this guy Abramoff was in a very credible position to implicate whoever he wanted to!

“It’s the seriousness of the allegation, not whether it’s true or not”

I don't think so but all Abrimoff donations were for legal amounts. I don't think they can be questioned.

Pointing is one thing. Providing daming evidence is
another, and if Abramoff has any discretion, he might
withhold on someone he thinks might be helpful later.

But does Abramoff know that, which is what matters.

And I was mistaken about Hillary not being mentioned.
I see her name on the list, with a dollar figure
higher than Teddy's.

Well, I'm really worried that this going to hurt the GOP in November. My fear - and I admit I'm probably paranoid - is that the Democrats will gain control of Congress and make a run at impeaching George W. Bush.

They may be able to impeach him if they win the House, but unless they have 60 votes in the Senate ( if they even win back the Senate ), President Bush will remain in office ( unless he would resign of course ).

The whole impeachment thing is a bunch of baloney. You actually think the American people are going to stand for another impeachment of a President ? And a double one at that, they also want Cheney as well...

It takes 2/3`s majority in the Senate to convict. No 60 Senate votes finding guilt, Bush survives....period.
