The obstructionist Dems are scrambling to figure something out because they know that the majority of the Senate clearly recognizes what a great nominee Alito is.
Senate rules leave lots of loopholes where the minority can get its way.
Unfortunately, it is not easy to change the rules once they are in place.
1) They want to claim they gave a fair hearing before nuking him
Or
2) They hope the extra week may turn something up before the vote they can use against him. Hey, it could happen.

If we can get one liberal or moderate to retire on the court and replace it with a conservative, the court will FINALLY, after decades and decades, be conservative again.

You can't really blame the Democrats for delaying, if they can get away with it. The question is, why do we let them get away with it?
There's no way that the Republicans would have pulled this kind of thing off when they were in the minority. But the Democrats have done so repeatedly.
