NEW YORK -- Morgan Stanley has fired a stock-research analyst and three sales staffers in the Wall Street firm's institutional-stock division after they accompanied one or more clients on a visit to an adult-entertainment club, according to people familiar with the matter.
The firing of the staffers, all men, sent a message that exclusionary, male-only activities won't be tolerated at the firm, according to people familiar with the matter. In mid-2004, Morgan Stanley agreed to pay $54 million to settle a gender-discrimination case. As part of the settlement, Morgan Stanley denied wrongdoing but agreed to take additional steps to promote diversity and conduct antidiscrimination training.
One of the complaints in the gender-discrimination case brought by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was that women in the same institutional-stock division had been improperly excluded from certain client-related activities such as male-only golf outings and strip-club visits.
The EEOC complaint in 2001 followed an individual complaint filed with the EEOC in 1998 by a former institutional-stock saleswoman, Allison Schieffelin, who was fired in 2000. She had charged that gender discrimination caused her not to be promoted to managing director.

In the recent episode, the four fired employees were all technology-industry specialists who made the strip-club visit during free time while they were attending a three-day Morgan Stanley conference for tech investors in early November at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix.
The firm has a policy against participation in an exclusionary event while on company business, people familiar with the firm said. One rule specifically bars attending adult-entertainment establishments in connection with company business. One or more clients were present at the Arizona establishment, one person familiar with the matter said.

What about these all-female gyms that I see all over the place? Why are these exclusionary establishments allowed to flourish? What if a couple of ladies from Morgan Stanley went there together.
It was in -- get this -- Reno. There was an unknown "house comic"/MC. I had no idea who she was or what the whole thing was about. Someone had given me ticket. I was by far the youngest guy in the room. The next youngest was probably mid-50s, but there were some guys well into their seventies in the audience. It was a weird scene. Rancher types and business guys.

I stumbled on Burlesque history about ten years ago. Tempest was known for plowing big cash into her wardrobe and perfected the classic syncopated bump and grind.
She never went nude. She relied on the tease and timing.
My personal opinion that Marilyn Monroe took here coquette style from Tempest.

No idea who she was...and only vaguely knew what the hell she was doing because I'd seen a burlesque show at a state fair years before and, of course, the show Gypsy.
What you have now is something altogether different.
I saw a doc a few years ago about Mandrake the Magician who was born in New Westminster/Vancouver.
Part of the doc was devoted to how Vaudville changed into the striptease club scene in the fifties.
They interviewed a couple of the old school strip tease dancers because in his later years Mandrake did the strip tease circuit.
Those old dolls were amazing and at the time of the doc were still working.

A lot of talent came out of those old burlesque houses. That's where Bob Fosse got his start.
But as I said, what you have now is something different. It's very cold and all about money. Strip joints in NYC are very big among a certain type of Wall Streeter.
Fosse makes reference to it in his highly biographical All that Jazz film. And there is material on it in the definitive bio of him, All His Jazz. He started playing the burlesque circuit at 15, while still in high school, and you can see it in a number of his dance routines. Nobody knows why his mother let him work the strip joints as a kid.
...contrast that to Eddie Murphy, who used to sneak into Mahattan at night to play the comedy clubs, then fall asleep in school the next day...
