More Teenagers Getting Into Serious Trouble Former Juvenile Judge Blames Easy Access To Guns

POSTED: 10:30 pm EST January 6, 2006 UPDATED: 11:06 pm EST January 6, 2006

COLUMBUS -- More teenagers are getting into serious trouble in Franklin County, according to the latest juvenile crime numbers from the prosecutor's office.

Serious crimes, with the exception of murder, are all on the increase when it comes to juveniles, NBC 4's Nancy Burton reported on Friday. Deciding that young offenders should be treated as adults despite their age is also on the rise.

Two years ago, the court caseload involving juveniles was a little less than 14,000. The number of juvenile cases has increased by almost 4,000 in the past two years. A former juvenile judge blamed easy access to handguns.

"Getting a handgun on the street is very easy," said former juvenile Judge Yvette McGee Brown.

Because robberies involving guns have increased, prosecutor Ron O'Brien said more juveniles are being tried as adults.

"We just try to follow the law," O'Brien said.

In 2005, however, there were 38 juveniles the court ordered bound over and tried as adults. The last time the number was higher was in 1998, Burton reported.

"I think it sends them a message," said Jim Nance, whose daughter Andrea was murdered.

Two of the three teenagers who murdered Nance's daughter were convicted as adults and are in prison for many, many years with no chance of parole.

To stop juvenile crime, the Legislature mandated some time ago that juveniles be treated as adults for certain crimes such as murder. The challenge, O'Brien and McGee Brown said, is to make sure the juvenile offender is treated while in prison so when they get out of prison, the community is still safe.

For some reason, I don't think it is the easy access to ILLEGAL guns on the street that sends these kids to a life of crime...

I was changing my auto insurance policy a few weeks ago.....during that time, a discussion began about a speeding ticket.

"those vehicles will always get you in trouble" - the insurance agent explained ......

And I thought that priests were good at absolution! lol

It's not the guns. Most kids use to have access and probably even own guns and we didn't see this. Now there are less guns and more crime. My opinion is that it's idle time. They used to go to school and work.

The Left is starting with a major bs campaign on crime that resembles years past. First the message is - prison must be a rehabilation experience for "youths" who murder. If you don't spend money on rehab, then don't be surprised they are murdering you. Next - since you are not spending money on rehab, we are not going to lock them up anymore because it does no good - it is only revenge.

Second, it is the guns that make them do it. Next, it will be - take your pick - white racism, lack of funds for housing, education, etc, immigration reform (if that ever happens), the lack of racial preferences, lack of socialized medicine, Christians discriminating against gays, etc.

OHHHHH those nasty guns....why who woulda thought that a little innocent looking piece of metal could bring such harm on a charming, innocent faced little child that is the darling of his mommy's eye???? (sarcasm)

If kids went to school and had a job, there wouldn't be all this crime, or if mommy would stay home and tend to the kids she brought into the world, it might help.....

GG is spot on. The left is cranking up all the excuses for bad behavior and ignores personal responsibility. The left is hoping to take over in 2006/2008 US elections and will govern as it talks. Expect soft treatment of criminals and perverts. Expect the honest citizens to be taxed more to pay for crap like midnight basketball (remember that Klintoon solution?)

As long as we don't have any leaders the 'rot' will continue. I cannot help but believe that if just one politically bent individual raised his voice and said "this country is going to hell in a handbasket and everyone knows it, I'm not going to let it happen, with your help we are gonna' clean house!" He/she will go directly to the people, tell the folks the plan, skip Congress and let the people tell the Representatives to get onboard or lose their coverted jobs and all it's the bennies. Deaming? maybe, but I'll bet most Americans would jump aboard.

And why get a minimum wage job when you can just move a little bit of illegal drugs and make the same money in just a few minutes. These drugs would have a value measured in fractions of a penny if not for the War on Some Drugs.

Parents have to be responsible here too. If your kid is working at McDonalds and wearing designer clothes and driving a vet, something just might be wrong.

The Leftists in Columbus are just laying the ground work to outlaw guns.

The esteemed City Council passed a law last year requiring all "assault weapons" be registered. I think 12 or 15 were registered.
