Golden Globes may make a star of 'Brokeback' (Reuters Barf Alert!)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Brokeback Mountain," once ridiculed as "the gay cowboy movie" but now the front-runner in Hollywood's Oscar race, gets its first major awards show test on Monday night -- in prime time with millions watching.

The gay romance goes into the 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards on Monday with the most nominations -- seven -- of any film and with a favorite status that many in the industry think could be unshakable in the buildup to the March 5 Oscars.

The Golden Globe Awards are an only-in-Hollywood tradition. They are given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a hard-to-join group composed of a large number of freelancers working for some obscure publications.

But they give one of the best awards parties in town and over the years the show has become famous as a predictor of Oscar winners. And the stars sashaying across the red carpet in drop-dead designer duds is reminiscent of the glamour of old Hollywood.

Normally the Globes help set up the Oscar race by drawing public attention to films that are the strongest contenders.

The Globes' two main awards are best drama, for which "Brokeback" is a contender, and best musical or comedy.

Taiwanese-born director Ang Lee's tale of love and loneliness in the mountains of Wyoming is a strong contender for best drama by virtue of its picking up a slew of best movie awards from film critics and nabbing top prize at 2005's Venice Film Festival.

But its makers are very conscious the movie's theme of homosexual love in the macho world of Marlboro Country could be a problem for mainstream audiences and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Lee has said he thought reaction would be split. "Some people would like it, and some people wouldn't even go to see it or it would be a laughingstock, like when they called it 'a gay cowboy movie.' Then when they see it, they start to embrace it. It's a wonderful turnaround."

"Brokeback" is up against "The Constant Gardener," a thriller based on a John le Carre novel; "Good Night, and Good Luck," George Clooney's tale of the fight against McCarthyism; "A History of Violence," a story of the violence that lurks beneath the surface in everyday life; and "Match Point," Woody Allen's "comeback" film about the cost of social climbing in Britain.

"Brokeback's" star, Heath Ledger, who has won rave reviews, is a candidate for best actor, but the competition is tough with Philip Seymour Hoffmann, seemingly the man to beat for his performance as gay novelist Truman Capote in "Capote." Other category nominees include Terrence Howard for "Hustle & Flow," David Strathairn as broadcaster Edward R. Morrow in "Good Night, and Good Luck," and Russell Crowe for "Cinderella Man."

Vying for best musical or comedy are "Mrs. Henderson Presents," "Pride and Prejudice," "The Producers," "The Squid and the Whale" and "Walk the Line."

The nomination of "The Squid and the Whale" as a comedy surprised many because the movie is a harrowing tale of a divorce as seen from the eyes of a couple's two teenage sons.

The current quality level of Hollywood blockbusters is at an all time low. Can you imagine that this is the best pic of the year? It's no wonder people don't go to the theatre anymore.

Geez, we got gay cowboys, pharmaceutical industry is evil, and McCarthyism. Yeah, they don't have a political agenda. Sure.

It doesn't really matter what the movie has, as long as it has their agenda. I am not going to see Brokeback, but I've heard that there really aren't that many sex scenes. It's just a lot of scenery, then anal sex, then scenery, then men kissing, then scenery, etc. It's only getting the nomination because it features homosexuality.

Everytime some new gay movie comes along, they love it in Hollywood. All kinds of awards. Except of course, in the award for actually making money.

I didn't watch the globes anyway. I watched Jack kick some butt on 24. I think 24 and House are pretty much the only shows I watch every week.

But it seems as if just about every TV show is so damned politically correct. It's just so irritating.

Take any criminal show. CSI, Law and Order, whatever. If there's a white guy killed, and early in the show they arrest a black guy or other minority guy, you know that one of two things will happen. 1) The minority will be completely exonerated, but the first glance at evidence wouldn't bear this out. 2) The minority was guilty of the hit, but was being controlled by some white guy wearing an expensive suit and overcoat. If a minority gets killed, it is usually a white guy but sometimes someone who is the same race as the minority.

Last season, by golly, 24 had an arab terrorist. Who'd have thought that arabs might be terrorists. Not Hollywood. Since 9-11, you can more or less count on one hand the arab terrorists in fiction movies.

My tv viewing list is short. ER. I almost dropped ER when they felt the need to push the gay agenda hard with the "Carrie Weaver" character. They still push buttons on occasion that may reduce my list to zero.

Thank you for bringing this up. I had never heard of that Palestine film, but I immediately knew it would win as soon as they announced the nominees. Of course the Foreign Press would take the opportunity to slap down Israel. And all the American Jews clapping. The irony is too rich

While everyone here goes crazy over "Brokeback Mountain" (which I don't see as particularly political because Ang Lee doesn't seem to push a big political agenda) they say few words about the big ass kissing George Clooney is getting from Hollywood for his black & white alteration of history and his big oil bugaboo. Not to mention the crap that Spielberg is pushing. Clever boys who are connecting their history films to the Bush administration and the war on terror. Of course in the most negative way possible.

This is the real danger, not the gay equivalent of "Splendor in the Grass"

Sometimes we all could use a little push. You're right. I've got to get to work on the home page. Thanks for reminder.

About films today...If on-screen cursing were eliminated, no one would notice. No ever says, "Good movie, but there wasn't enough cursing."

Watch the awards? And give Hollywood what it needs to keep making it's offensive offerings - more viewers. No. I won't do it.

I watch the classics. In that by-gone era, movie makers used to respect their audiences.

Ditto that.

What I want to know is if that story was so compelling, why do that hide that in the advertising? I've seen several commercials for it and not one of them even showed the two gays together. They talk about a love story and show the guys with women.

They can't even be honest about the damn theing. They are trying to deceive people into watching it.

I read an expose several years ago that described how movie studios would try and pimp out it's movies to the foreign Hollywood press.

Needless to say it's not merit that wins awards, it's how much perks and $$$ that goes into these "voters" pockets.

These awards shows are just a showcase for movie/music companies to market their crap anyways. Do not take it seriously.

I noticed that too ... it's VERY deceiving

I guess most people don't share your opinion, since there are so many message boards on this topic on FR alone.

The only comfort one can get re: George Clooney and the ass-kissing the left and terrorists got last night, is that they win statuettes, we win elections. And while George Clooney is celebrating at Chateau Marmonte, GWB is packing the Supreme Court with like-minded Conservatives. Hollywood awards are a momentary thing. A week later nobody remembers who won. But elections have broad influence. So screw George Clooney and his ilk.
