He grew up around Barry Goldwater, arrived in Washington with the "Contract With America" crowd, boycotted one of President Bill Clinton's State of the Union speeches and is more conservative on some issues than President Bush.
Now John Shadegg, a six-term Republican congressman from Arizona, has jumped into the race for House majority leader, trying to position himself as the reform candidate in challenging two more established members of the GOP leadership, Missouri's Roy Blunt and Ohio's John A. Boehner.
In arguing that the Republicans have "lost sight of our ideals," Shadegg, 56, is espousing not only tighter ethics rules, but also a return to the smaller-government ethos that has been lost in an era of ballooning budgets and pork-barrel spending.
"I think he's by far the most conservative guy who's acceptable to a broad ideological spectrum in the [Republican] Conference," said former representative Pat Toomey, president of the Club for Growth, who encouraged Shadegg to run. "He's a very easy guy to get along with, a very good-natured guy. He doesn't make enemies." While clearly an underdog, Toomey said, "John is in the best position to demand a departure from the old ways of doing business."

Yea,
An effort to stop him.
He would really shake things up.
If he's 'ethically clean', then he's got my vote!
The only way that the Republicans are going to keep the House in 2006 is to counter the Rat charges of corruption and Republican voter discomfort. And to do that they need to get back to the principles that got them it in the first place in 1994 -- limited government and limited govenment spending.
Shadegg is young, smart, and has his head on straight. He`ll be great on TV and his high energy level comes across well.
Best of all, HE`S NOT NANCY
Yeah...for Speaker of the House.
That's it - THIS GUY HAS GOT TO BE ELECTED. PERIOD!
Rep. John Shadegg
It's one thing to hold firm to an ideologically pure point of view. It's quite another to convince "lesser men" to do so on a regular basis.
I'm glad Newt Gingrich took some Republicans to the woodshed the other day. The Republicans must get back to business and back to conservative basics.
Great!! And you are the Representative from which district?? :-)
I agree with you and we should let our representatives know that.
He is in a leadership post now, and had has various roles before.
Its not like he is some rookie who has never led anything before jumping into the pool for the first time.
It's quite another to convince "lesser men" to do so on a regular basis.
Its done...quite often.
Newt Gingrich did it, effectivly, President Reagan was able to do it.
On the other side of the aisle, Nancy Pelosi does it.
He would shake things up, and bring back a more ethical version of Newt Gingrich, something the house sorely needs.
He used to be my congress-critter too, until redistricting a few years ago. He's a good guy, IMO!
Nancy doesn't have a chance of convincing "lesser men". She's on the bottom herself.
I love President Bush, but the MSM thinks that the above statement is really saying something, but it isn't. The fact is a lot of people are more conservative than President Bush, including a lot of his supporters.
She already has.
Why do you think she is the minority leader in the first place?
She made "lesser men" vote for her, and they still back her, even when they know its wrong......also explains why one of them is going to run a suicide campaign for the senate.
