A Penn State chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity has nominated Joe Paterno for a national award, citing the coach's support for athletes who were "wrongfully accused" of crimes. The graduate chapter, Iota Lambda Lambda, also noted Paterno's "leadership, community uplift, manhood, scholarship and perseverance" in nominating him for the Citizen of the Year honor, member Andrew Jackson Sr. wrote this week. "I thought Joe was deserving," Jackson said Friday. He said that Paterno "stuck by" Rashard Casey, a former Nittany Lion, and Anwar Phillips. Casey was accused in May 2000 of beating an off-duty police officer, but a grand jury declined to indict him. Phillips was acquitted of sexual and indecent assault charges in 2003. Both retained positions on the football team. "I was concerned about the allegations, that they (other parties) tried to drag them through the mud," Jackson said. "I think people should be recognized and respected for their merit." Omega Psi Phi, established in 1911 as a black fraternity at Howard University, has had members at Penn State, including football players, since 1921. Paterno and other people nominated by Omega Psi Phi chapters nationwide will undergo consideration for the fraternity's Citizen of the Year distinction. It'll be awarded in November. Jackson said the honor is intended to recognize people who've contributed to society and their local communities. Dr. Rodrick Stevenson, of State College, is the Penn State nominee for the national Omega Man of the Year award.
I hope Joe Pa can hang on another year or two and take another national title. He's a great man!

I would hope NOW realizes that if it wasn't for the money Penn State football brings to the table to be re-distributed, there wouldn't be women's sport teams. None of which are self-supporting to my knowledge.
