The American Association of Retired Persons began as an organization dedicated to improving the lives of our elderly. These days it is being run by leftists. When you become a member, part of your dues go to support their political agenda.
It was Winston Churchill who said (in other words) that liberalism is a natural state for the young, and conservatism a natural state for the same people, only a few decades farther down the road. This is a true statement, as all population group surveys prove. The reason for the evolution is time and experience. Life drives out fairy tale philosophies in a statistically significant number of individuals. Radical concepts about the efficacy of income redistribution give way to an understanding that if everybody works for the government, nothing gets done and people starve. France is a mess, Cuba is a mess, North Korea is a mess, the old Soviet Union was a mess and the new Venezuela will shortly be a mess. Liberalism produces exactly the reverse of what it promises, every time and every where it is tried.

AARP is full of hypocrites. They offer members' advice on retirement accounts, investing, and where to shelter your money from taxes, but will fight tooth and nail to keep the Ponzi scheme of Socialist Security running. The pronunciation of their acronym is appropriate for them.

On a recent 4000 mile trip I actually had a motel clerk ask if I had a military ID. That was good for the discount. I sometimes ask for commercial rate if I'm on business. I agree, AAA is a much better organization to belong to when in search of discounts.

I wish they were a principped liberal front -they are just a greedy advocacy group fro the govt. to steal from the young and give to the old.
As I said - it was long ago. It appears to have the primary purpose of collecting money.

You don't 'spose that the dirt cheap life insurance for those who are at a risk of using it is funded by more than just the members who pay into it do you?
Enough is enough. The AARP gives an award and won't even show up to defend it on Bill O'Reilly's television show. Under the guise of representing millions of noble retired Americans, the AARP has been allowed free reign for too long. Their policies are not in touch with the average red head, much less the dozens of red states that constitute the majority of America. For conservatives searching for an answer, there is a safe harbor from this unrelenting storm of liberalism that surges incessantly from the offices of the AARP. It's NASCON, the National Association for Senior Concerns.
If you don't stand for what is right, you stand for what is wrong. The latest slap at the millions of senior conservatives who have had no choice for representation is the awarding of a "Man of the Year" award from the AARP to Harry Belafonte. They are putting on their pedestal a man that said, "Bin Laden didn't come from the abstract. He came from somewhere, and if you look where. you’ll see America's hand of villainy." He is a man that stood on his soap box and proclaimed, "I not only think that they (the leaders of his own country) are misguided, but I think they know exactly what they are doing and I think that they are men who are possessed of evil." He called both Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, "slaves with the privilege of living in the house of the master. exactly the way the master intended to have you serve him." Enough is enough.
NASCON celebrates individual achievement, promotes less government, encourages personal responsibility and endorses a simpler tax code. We don't have all of the discount programs, yet, that our liberal counterparts promote, but we do have a foundation based on conservative values. We do represent the millions of retired Americans, and those not yet retired, who are currently muffled by the AARP. Their views deserve to be heard and we are determined to be that voice. But we need your help to make a difference.

I'll bet that's just the highlight of the clerk's day. What's he expected to do about it, exactly? :)
And don't forget that Al Gore cast the tie-breaking vote to tax social security income. I joined NASCON last year. I'm not sure what 'benefits' I'm hoping they'll offer in time. What I most want is a lobby in Washington that represents the best interests of the elderly, not the best interests of a political party or ideology.
