91,700 abortions in (NYC)city [40 out of 100 pregnancies ended in a planned abortion]
NY DAILY NEWS ^ | January 15, 2006 | BY PAUL H.B. SHIN

For every 100 babies born in New York City, women had 74 abortions in 2004, according to newly released figures that reaffirm the city as the abortion capital of the country. And abortions for out-of-town women performed in the city increased from 57 to 70 out of every 1,000 between 1996 and 2004, a subtle yet noticeable trend that experts say may reflect growing hurdles against the procedure in more conservative parts of the country.

The new Vital Statistics report released by the city Department of Health this month shows there were 124,100 live births, 11,700 spontaneous abortions and 91,700 induced abortions in the city in 2004. That means 40 out of 100 pregnancies in the city ended in a planned abortion - almost double the national average of 24 of 100 pregnancies in 2002, estimated by the Alan Guttmacher Institute, a Manhattan-based nonprofit group that researches reproductive health issues.

I'm at work, so I don't really have time to catch you up on a decade or two of legislative restrictions and clinic closings, state by state. :)

That's fine. I'll be happy with an example when you're free

And another question. Why fly all the way to NYC for an abortion from a red state? An abortion and shopping spree weekend?

Hell... all the crazy, hippie-chicks I chased from '68-'75 took the pill.

Women used to avoid sex as long as possible to avoid becoming pregnant, is my point. Even aside from religious convictions and/or any other moral motivation, the key thing was that people exercised a greater degree of sexual controls prior to the availability of "abortion on demand," AND, also, most males would, too, to avoid the responsibilities

Agreed. However, what is so terribly sad besides the obvious death of the baby, and the subsequent life-long guilt of the mother, is the general lack of awareness about post-abortion syndrome which affects MEN. Men can really step up and impact the decision a women might make, and probably, more would, if only they knew the consequences that they would suffer as well.

Obviously you don't expect anything of the kind, and you want to make the point that because abortion is not completely illegal, it is still available. Women can travel if they feel they need to. Let me ask you, do you think there will be a time when it's completely illegal in this country? And are you okay with some states deciding to keep it legal, if they do so?

From the article:

The city's role as a haven for women seeking to end pregnancies may become more pronounced as other states continue to adopt more legal restrictions against abortions - such as laws requiring mandatory waiting periods (25 states), parental consent or notification for minors (35 states) and two visits before an abortion (six states).

*************

If I understand it correctly, the point of the article is to blame the "red states" for the increase in abortions in NYC. Which is despicable, and a transparent attempt at influencing public policy and laws, as well as excusing or denying the immorality of the residents of NYC.

I don't believe the paper when it says those abortions are from women flying in. It doesn't make sense. A family friends daughter is moving from NYC to DC because she "can't find" a guy who wants to settle down. That seems in line with other anecdotal stuff I've heard about NYC

Women can travel if they feel they need to

You're aware the majority of red states aren't near NYC, right? Why not drive to Maryland(or any large city in any state). Hell, I've heard radio advertisements here for abortions where two girls are causally chatting about whether to get general or local anesthesia for their abortions like they were taking about chewing gum.

Let me ask you, do you think there will be a time when it's completely illegal in this country?

How could that happen?

And are you okay with some states deciding to keep it legal, if they do so?

Of course

It's just wrong and biased reporting not in reality. I bet I could get on the phone and schedule an appointment this afternoon.

For some reason, your graphic is totally black on my screen.

Mine too :(... and when I try to view the image at its direct location, it's still all black, but thin. Strange.

It's definitely biased. From what I understand, you are correct about being able to schedule an appointment without waiting.

Our culture has changed so much since the late fifties, early sixties. Such a short time, it's almost incomprehensible.

I don't think there is a preponderance of women "flying in", certainly. I think how often that happens in the future would depend on how many states do overturn legal abortion (should an overturn of Roe even make that possible, which I don't think is a given).

As to your friend's daughter, "moving from NYC to DC because she "can't find" a guy who wants to settle down"; as a Washington area resident, I'm not sure she made a solid choice in location if that is her search criterion. ;-D

"I've heard radio advertisements here for abortions where two girls are causally chatting about whether to get general or local anesthesia for their abortions like they were taking about chewing gum."

I've never heard an ad like that in my life; sounds like it's a right-to-life organization doing an ad as a "shocker".

Thanks for your answers, by the way. This is not a topic I view emotionally, but rather as a fascinating public policy question, and I appreciate civil discourse. :)

You said you are in Maryland, so that is probably true. BTW, your profile claims that Maryland is the southernmost state to get all four seasons; Western North Carolina certainly gets all four of them beautifully, and I've even seen all four in the eastern part of that state. :)

Remember the radio station 99.1 WHFS, now spanish? They had the abortion commercials.

I see a few Bible Belt states outlawing abortion, maybe a few out west. That's it.

North Carolina doesn't get snow on a regular basis though. Maybe at higher altitudes.

A lot of women "fly in" to NYC for abortions, just as a lot of people fly in for many medical procedures ranging from heart surgery to cancer treatment.

I definitely remember Damian, and the great music they used to play before the format changed. But I never heard ads like that. If you heard them as being ads for clinics, I can't dispute it since I didn't hear anything like that.

how Sad that is. My heart is really broken. It is astounding to me how NYC is run by big government and it is like a waste land. When are people going to wake up?

It was in the 90's, around the same time they were testing out condom ads. Remember the "FEEL THE HEAT" ads? I almost split a rib when I heard Rush use the "FEEL THE HEAT" line as a segment ender.
