A State in Disarray

A tour of colonial New York soon after the Revolutionary War is said to have inspired George Washington to describe the nascent state as the “Seat of Empire.”[1] For much of the next two centuries, the Empire State would more than live up to his assessment and would have few serious rivals in global commerce, finance, and manufacturing. Nurturing new enterprise and creating millions of new jobs, New York was truly an economic empire unto itself.

More recently, however, the New York State economy has been far from imperial. Between 1979 and 2004—a period that saw two sustained U.S. economic booms—New York created new jobs at less than half the national pace,[2] underperforming even the “old and cold” states of the upper Midwest.[3] New York’s share of total U.S. personal income dropped by nearly 10 percent during the same period, and its share of all states’ economic output dropped by 12 percent.[4]

NY is 2 states.

1) New York City

2) The rest of NY

As long as NYC is cranking out millionaires, the rest of the state is thought to be just fine.

NEA. The teacher unions in NYS never negotiate for less than double-digit raises. And most if not all of the upstate counties are facing a decreasing tax base.

Know that firsthand.Lived in upstate many years.Growing up,I watched big companies just disappear overnight.Seemingly.A process of maybe 15 years.Companies ,to name afew,Remington Rand,Sears,Chicago pneumatic. The only large employer left is Remington Arms where the gravy has hit hard times.Have alot of friends who work there hitting hard times. It is almost impossible just to start a mom or pop store, unless you HAVE money to start with.Everyone in Govt.,has to get their hands on some.E.P.A.,Permits etc.It is sad because anyone who want to stay after college chooses to go where opportunity knocks. Most of the smart ones leave, yet pine for home.Search GRANTS and see a polation handing over money.Sickening.The people are so grateful, they don't realize its their money to start with.Thats the money N.Y.already took!Haven't been there for 10 years, but talked to neice who is a school teacher working on her masters. She would leave except hubby does good. She said it has become the halves and no halves. No in between.Sad.
