Some of the students cited their "heritage". But if history or heritage is any guide, the Rebel flag has no business flying in Maryville, Blount County, Tennessee.

But Tennessee as a whole was a Confederate state, and even in the pro-Union east there were some supporters of the Confederacy.

Come on kids, you know you are supposed to wear the rainbow fag, er flag.
We have tolerance for everyone, as long as they're commies or fags.
Hey Colonel, when did you get promoted?
Give my regards to Mr Greenjeans.

The SCV headquarters is in eastern TN (Elm Springs). Not sure the distance from that town though.

True enough that the flag that most passes for a confederate flag is not the correct flag, and a lot of these kids probably moved into the school district from another area, but this is a free speech issue, like posted later if people on the left can say anything they like and get by with it. The "rebel flags" that are probably being worn here are a political statement as much as a rainbow.

My experience with the Confederate Flag folks has indicated to me that they are either young (uneducated), old (uneducated), poor (uneducated), or racist. Oh, they are also self described "whites". Also, they prefer to travel in groups or be surrounded by like minded 'flaggers'. That same 'bad ass' heritage lover would crap his pants wearing that shirt in Oakland.
I wonder what they would do if someone were to tattoo a Rebel Flag on their forehead? I'm a big supporter of Free Speech, even if it is offensive. Wearing the shirt is such a lame statement as they are usually dirty and/or in poor condition (fashion?). I really like the idea of a more permanent mark, sort of like making the Jews wear the yellow star. This way, the 'Rebels' could display their pride more easily and frequently, and they couldn't hide by changing clothes.

I can't believe so many Southerners still want to defend the right for their kids to wear the flag of the treasonous Confederacy to school. How can one call oneself an American patriot and wave that flag? Waving that flag to show Southern heritage is no better than waving a Soviet flag to show ones Russian heritage.

The Confederate Banner will NEVER offend anyone.
Unless they LET it.

But if history or heritage is any guide, the Rebel flag has no business flying in Maryville, Blount County, Tennessee. What history is that? The history of Nazi Germany? The history of the Iron Curtain? If the flag has no business flying anywhere then, by the same token, you have no business expressing your opinion on this board.

The 'Rebel' flag has a right to fly anywhere someone recognizes and respects their heritage.

This smells like the dirty work of the "League of the South" again. They must want the pupils to be brainwashed by DeLorenzo's view of distorted history.
