Doctors seek kitchen knife ban EDWARD BLACK

Key points • Doctors claim long kitchen knives serve no purpose except as weapons • 55 out of 108 homicide victims in Scotland were stabbed last year • Police superintendents say a ban would be difficult to enforce

Key quote "Many assaults are impulsive, often triggered by alcohol or misuse of other drugs, and the long pointed kitchen knife is an easily available, potentially lethal weapon, particularly in the domestic setting" - Dr Emma Hern, writing in British Medical Journal

They are quite tough, but no, not as tough as the steel one.

Yes, thank you. What other weapons should we banned. I have a feeling a good number of the other homicides were vehicular. They should ban those next.

More of those homicides would have been done with guns had the populace not already been disarmed.

My favorite trick is to peel a lemon with the big knife, in one spiraling piece. Takes me no more than 7 seconds.

Ever watch the original Iron Chef? Chef Saki had an apple peeling contest with a student at the CIA. By the time the student had his first apple peeled, Saki had about a dozen.

I see no real benefit in what is, in effect, the gradual extension of "supermax" prison rules to the rest of society. Do they really long for the good ol' days of Ghengis Khan when those who wanted to chop their meat for dinner had to use a single communal knife chained to a block, under the eyes of a soldier? It's why Chinese food is traditionally served in bite-size pieces.

Is this what these overeducated numbskulls want for us?

P!ss on them. The only difference between a bread knife and a weapon is a few minutes with a grinder.

Mrs. MWT prefers wustof over hinkle.

She prefers a Benelli 12 gauge for hunting.

LOL, I'd lose a finger at that rate! At $200, i'd hide it, too.

I use a santoku for a lot of stuff, I like the shape better for veggies, etc. It would not make as good a weapon for stabbing as a chef's knife would, however.

Is it true that chop sticks came about because all the eating untensils were taken away for fear the peasents would use them as weapons?

These are obviously doctors who haven't done much cooking.

Assault knives are merely ugly knives.

If you have a pretty handle, it's OK.

Like assault rifles, assault knives will kill you deader than a regular one. ...and they hurt more. ...and you die more scared. ;-)

Me, too.

Although we also use a Jap-style chef's knife (it has a name, but I do not know it, Wustof is the brand --- basically a square edged chef's knife with side indentions -- doubles as a spatula).

bathtubs and Oxygen dehydroxide (water) are dangerous. Women with postpartum use them to drown kids. Toilets are bad when they flush kittens.

The human race is very resourceful when it comes finding things to use as weapons. The authorities can ban guns, then long, pointy kitchen knives, and people intent on doing harm will find a wide variety of implements to do the deed. Bust a chair over someone's head; shove them down the steps or through a window; grab a rock from the garden. Drown them in the bathtub; smother them with a pillow....the list is endless.

Instead of dealing with problem people individually and harshly, these idiots come up with a "solution" (and a half-assed one at that) that inconveniences everyone and doesn't solve the problem.

That's just my opinion. I could be wrong. I probably am wrong, not being a doctor and all.

Maybe the little liberals will allow the people to have access to scissors. Or maybe not. Maybe the paternalism of the Left runs so deep that every citizen needs a binky and a diaper change.

"Ever watch the original Iron Chef? Chef Saki had an apple peeling contest with a student at the CIA. "

Yeah, but it's Sakai. He is a knifework wizard. I'm far from in his category, but I'm a pretty good hand with a chef's knife.

I saw that show, and was very impressed.

I cannot tell any real difference between henkels and wustof, but each offer at least 2 handle styles. That's the big difference for me.

"It's why Chinese food is traditionally served in bite-size pieces."

I thought it was because: (1) the emporer did not want to see that it recognizably came from an animal and (2) for limited fuel reasons, they cooked in woks, which necessitates little pieces.
