High Schooler FReeps English Class
1/18/06 | self

The entire school assembled to hear the story. A young man in his 30's was scheduled to address the group and outline his misdeeds, which included armed robbery and drug dealing. According to his speech, he was eventually caught and served eight years in prison. As 'punishment' for his crimes, he was encouraged to take advantage of the free educational program offered in the prison. He graduated during his term with a four-year college degree.

According to his introduction, he is now a well paid professional speaker who travels around talking to school groups about his crimes and 'punishment. At the end of the assembly, almost the entire group applauded and gave a standing ovation. Among those who didn't feel impressed to applaud or give standing ovation was this FReeper's 15 year old son.

The next day, in my son's English class, the teacher (whom my son describes as a "flaming liberal") told the class to write a half page describing their thoughts about the speaker and his accomplishments. Later in the class several, incuding my son, were invited to stand and share their thoughts with the class. All but one gave glowing praises about the speaker. The daring exception was my son. His comment went as follows:

"I didn't think the guy was that great. He may have gotten a college education and that may be the reason he has so many people's respect, but this man went through college on the taxpayer's dollar. Many hard working and bright students work very hard to get a college degree or even worse, don't get accepted into college at all due to lack of funds. A college scholarship is one of the most valuable things a student can earn. But this man went through college without having to pay a cent. This man has apparently been a drain on society for most of his life and is finally caught and was 'punished' by getting a free college education. Now he is being well paid to go to different schools around the country and talk about his experiences. I am outraged that no one else sees this man like I do".

His teacher's comment: "Well. That's a different opinion".

Although I do not have a great deal of confidence in the public school system, this incident illustrates how well a fifteen year old can understand and verbalize conservative values.

Sorry about the blatant exploitation of my own son here. I am quite proud of his insight and his flat-out bravery to stand up in front of his class and give his point of view. Hopefully his comments will stimulate others to consider the true merit of the speaker's 'accomplishments'.

Once again it is proved....home influence is the most important teacher.

You have a right to be proud. Let's hope your pride doesn't turn to dismay if your son pulls a D or an F in the class for his trouble. Maybe it's harder for a teacher on the high school level to do that than a left-wing college professor.

My brother in high school wrote a paper about how much his sister meant to him. He wrote about how good of an example she had been to him in church, school, and home and included details in each area. The teacher RAVED about his paper in the comments, saying how well it was written and thanking him for it.
I developed a new appreciation for that teacher and sent him a note to thank him I appreciate your son for being courageous in being a good example to others. Good eggs like him will only make the world a better place.

I seem to recall receiving an "F" on a paper in high school for using the word "gotten."

I love the way your son thought this through for himself. Pretty mature for a fellow his age.
